Why do places close/close early on Sundays?

Are we still on some old Jonny Tremainian sabbath idea that if you have your store open on a Sunday so people can buy a DVD that God will have you dunk your hand in a smelter full of molten metal?

Seriously? Monday-Saturday most stores are open to 9 or 10pm, but apparently on Sundays people only need to buy things up uintil six in the evening? And some places don't even dare OPEN on Sundays at all!

Come-on! It's 21st damn century. Open the damn stores till late on Sunday!

In some countries like Germany almost every shop is shoot on Sunday except when they have an 'open Sunday'.

Plenty of grocery stores around here are open on Sundays, 24 hours even.

So is Wal-Mart. But I wouldn't go in there if my dick were on fire and they were the nearest place to go to get baking soda.

Why?

Because they probably wouldn't have it for not being a top 20% seller.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but I think about shop owners.
If you're a small business owner, being open 7 days a week is going to kill you. That Sunday gives you a chance to rest a little, and get your inventory together, setup for the week, do schedules and everything else that gets pushed aside when you're running a small business.

Because not enough people are out shopping on Sunday evening to make it worthwhile to be open?

Maybe there's not enough people out shopping because most places are closed/closed early? If everyone was open...



For the record: I'm not talking about small businesses here where days off, time to do paperwork might be needed, but major places -like Best Buy- where there's enough personell and employees to play around with so that everyone gets their time off/time for management to do paperwork.

Maybe there's not enough people out shopping because most places are closed/closed early? If everyone was open...

Nobody is forcing the businesses to be closed. If they thought they could make money being open, they probably would be.

I worked today and it was busy, I think these people are lazy or overworked...coz I get my stuff done during the work week.

Yep. When I ran my computer business, we were open on Sundays, but that changed after a few years. I switched to an open Monday through Saturday method, and extended my Saturdays by 3 hours, to allow for people to come in earlier or later to avoid not getting in Sunday. It worked well.

In the more openly religious nations I have been in, The United States and the Republic of the Philippines, for the most part the stores are open. With full hours in the more openly religious metro Manila area. There are some US counties with some blue laws on alcohol left which are closed on the Lord's day/sabbath. But it is generally only government and information class workers who are off while retail are all working.

It was in less religious Europe in which everything was closed down. I assumed it was the union/government team that did it or maintains it. Not the competing churches who each had picked a different day anyway.

Stop, Drop and Roll, Trekker; Stop, Drop and Roll for pity's sake. No one likes the smell of burning hair.

I'm sure even though it has religious beginnings, not being open or open as long on Sundays has kind of morphed into a standard quality of life kind of thing. It seems to me, anyway. I think it's kind of nice knowing a place isn't going to be open on Sundays. Gives me a reason to slow down.

Chick-fil-A is closed here in NC on Sundays and I think it is great that their employees get to crash out once a week.

There are several states that still don't allow purchases of cars on Sundays, which I find interesting. I don't know what the history is behind that one.
