Why do people judge gamers?

You kids and your computery games - you won't know what to do with yourselves when civilization ends and there's no power to run your computers and the ionization in the atmosphere wouldn't let them work even if there was! You'll be BEGGING me to run a game for you using the full 3.5 edition D&D library (no PDFs, real honest-to-Zarquon dead tree media) I have squirreled away in my doomsday cellar!

Oh, please. I have more than enough portable systems and AA batteries to survive until I die of dehydration or someone kills me to eat my flesh. I'll be fine. And, unlike you, I'll have a source of light to play at night. Good luck rolling your d20s in the pitch black of that abandoned bomb shelter you're hiding in.
Didn't you know that there are lots of sets of polyhedral dice that glow in the dark?

Yup, my d20 is a blue GitD version. Runs on sunlight, unless we go all Matrix and fuck that up too.

Mine was green. As in mint green. That was one of the freakiest-looking things I ever saw when it glowed in the dark.

I have a glowing d12 and Nuclear Escalation has a glowing D6 with a mushroom cloud for the one. I have 2 d8s with dots but they don't glow.

I never understood the appeal of playing as STAR TREK characters in a video game. That is, manipulating digital puppets on repetitive, pre-determined missions. If I were to ever play a video game based on STAR TREK, it would seem that the starships themselves would provide enough entertainment. Specifically, firing phasers and quantum torpedoes and ... and so forth. I find the whole playing with puppets thing to be very strange, but I never judged gamers for that.

In fact, there are even video games out now, which are designed to help doctors home their eye-hand coordination and things like that. I'm not much of a gamer, at all, but when I've given it a go, I just want the KILL button and lots of easy targets. I don't want to be "challenged." It's bad enough there's these very strange controls, with the X, O, ^ buttons, the twirly knobs and all that ... maybe all of these things collectively influence people's judgement on gamers? But as I say, video games have certainly proven their worth, in certain circles ... and situations.

Judging *video* gamers? Pft. Playing video games, even if it's just some phone-based thing like Angry Birds, is common these days. You haven't seen judgmental until you try to explain to someone that you play RPGs with pencil, paper, dice, and books!

And I'll say, "Get offa mah lawn, SLACKERS!"

While I loves my video games, I'm with this guy when the apocalypse hits. I even know some good post-apocalyptic RPGs, though at that point you might as well just call those "life".

I also have a chainmail dice bag. Yeah.

Why do people judge gamers?
Well, I don't think they do. At least, not as much as they used to.

I think there's more acceptance of gaming as a proper, adult entertainment medium than ever has been before.

It helps that todays bright young things are a generation now who've never NOT had video games around. Even the previous generation were people for whom games were new and shiny, but todays twenty and thirty year olds never had a time in their life where video games did not exist. And these are the guys who are entering other industries like movies and television, so some of that pop-cultural acceptance is beginning to sink through to the mainstream. Thank goodness, it's taken long enough. ;)

I think up until recently (maybe even still within an older demographic) the old perceptions did still exist. Certainly movies and TV have always been wary of video games, because they were for so long the 'new media' and were considered by some within the entertainment industry, particularly within television, to be a genuine threat as a medium of entertainment capital. So there was this broad distrust of video games from even within the entertainment sector, and that seeped out into the media (and the public) more generally.

But I do think there's definitely a greater acceptance of gaming now.

Okay, so having said the above only a couple months ago, I got a cold splash in the face last night when a local TV station was doing a news story covering E3.

They reported the upcoming games, treated the industry with respect and dignity, all very well and good, the reporters were enthusing about upcoming titles like they were just like upcoming movies.

So I'm remembering this thread, thinking, "Yeah, you know, gaming is mainstream now, it's all cool. The days when people looked down on gaming as being something inferior to other media are long gone, just look at this, a proper, mature news report on the six o'clock news!" :techman:

And THEN...
... we get this little nugget from the reporter at the scene, delivered to camera right at the end of the story, imagine her tone-of-voice as very condescending:

"Remember when videogames were Pac-man and Space Invaders?"

And I was just like,

And like a stake to the heart, I was suddenly reminded that the mainstream media still DOESN'T treat gaming as anything other than 'that silly stuff that kids play with'. Like action figures or something. As if it's still not a valid entertainment medium in its own right, and that the fad is gonna die off any day now when everybody finally realizes the error of their ways, "grows up" and gets on with their lives. I mean, seriously... :vulcan:

What can I say? I can admit when I'm wrong. :)

Who cares what people think about gamers? I'm in my 60s and fixing to retire and I can't wait for the extra time for gaming. Especially since now I'll be getting paid to sit at home on my ass. LOL

Oh yes, you just know 30-40 years from now every single old folk's home will be full of people just playing video games all day.

44 year old gamer here, and I'll be continuing to play games as long as I have the facility and capacity to do so. :) Let the judgmental ones be damned. :)

Been playing games since the Atari 2600....kinda missed out on Colecovision, didn't even bother with Intellivision or Odyssey, overlooked Nintendo Entertainment System, went with Sega Master System and Atari XE. Worked my way into SNES and Sega Genesis (and got suckered into the Sega 32X....what a waste of add-on hardware that was). Was about to get into Atari Jaguar, and was advised by a knowledgeable Software Etc. (at the time) employee to wait for the Sony PlayStation. Wise words. I jumped in feet first with that, and haven't really looked back.

Now, I have a Nintendo GameCube, PS2, Xbox, 2 Xbox 360's, 2 PS3's, a PS Vita, and a PS4. (Xbox One is in the FAR future.) Also have two PC gaming rigs. Between all this hardware, I have a respectable game collection. :)

Pretty much this. Video games are totally mainstream.

Don't laugh. I'm having to check out assisted living places for my Mom, and they all come with cable and internet now.

^ That. Judgement be damned :). I enjoy playing video games, and they help me to relax and have fun.

Been playing since the NES, and I have had a Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Sega Game Gear, PS2, Wii, Wii U, DS, 3ds and Vita. Like each and everyone the same too, they're all really fun to play on.

<ominous voice> Welcome, brother. We have been expecting you. </ominous voice>

I think I've only ever owned two Nintendo systems....the Super Nintendo and the GameCube. But, you've owned an impressive list of systems yourself. :)

I would love to see Capcom do Hi-Def remakes of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 for PS3/PS4. Because of a lot of exclusivity BS, will probably never happen.

Thanks :). That's cool, never had a GameCube. Wanted one back in the day though, did get a chance to try one out at a friends and it was pretty neat.

That would be cool, wish they did branch out for that series. All of that exclusive BS really is silly :p.

GameCube was a cool little system, but its controller was really weird.

Exclusivity is cool to some degree...it helps in the competition between console companies.

But, usually, that is best when such a company natively starts out being exclusive. Like Bungie with Microsoft (which now, Bungie is multiplatform, and I soooo cannot wait to get Destiny for PS4), and Guerilla Games with Sony. Capcom pretty much develops for all systems, so I really don't know how Mikami and Nintendo worked out so solid an exclusivity for RE and RE0.

Mikami originally wanted RE4 to also remain exclusive to GameCube, but apparently Capcom had dollar signs in their eyes, and about a year or two after release on GameCube, made a version for PS2 (which included a new weapon and some new costumes, since there were a couple of minor feature issues in the port). Mikami-san was not a happy camper.

Lately, I've played RE4 on the PS3 in its Hi-Def re-release (download from PlayStation Network or Xbox Live). WOW! Not only did they resolve the feature issues (seeing characters in their selected outfits in both game play and cutscenes..a feature missing from the PS2 version), but they seem to have improved the lethality of the PRL 412 laser rifle from the PS2 port, and the game looks gorgeous. (Once you unlock that weapon, you're pretty much unstoppable.)

Ah yes but are you from the 1980's, when Christian Groups demanded all copies of Dungeons & Dragons be burnt for encouraging Satan worship, and promoting teen suicide?

Those were the Dark Times, Before the Playstation. Before all society's woes could be blamed on Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, and us pen-and-paper gamers were left in peace (well, unless you played Vampire the Masquerade, in which case you were still regarded as a Satan-worshipping suicide-mongerer!).

I do miss the option to let enemies live in games though. Read Dead Redemption at least had the option to gag and tie them, but unless it was a mission objective, it had no point in open world play.
Also in GTA you have no possibility whatsoever to treat people you injured, like when you hit them with a car.
I'm for some reason growing more and more disappointed by that.

Yea it is a little strange. I got a MadCatz Game Cube controller for my Wii, and it took some time to get used to. Now it's almost second nature.

To a point. There are some games (*cough*Fable*cough*) I wish weren't exclusive... since I'd never get an Xbox. There just aren't enough games out on it to warrant a purchase.

Yes it helps with competition, but it can be a double edged sword, when a company starts to rely on them and not on developing new ips to draw in customers.
