Why do people continue to insist Star Wars ships are faster??

People who claim this claim that 'Hyperspace' is faster than Warp. Why? What evidence is there to back this claim? In Episode 4 and Episode 8 they specifically use the words 'Light speed'. The frickin' Phoenix caught the Vulcans attention because it 'broke the light barrier' meaning the Pheonix is faster than the Star Wars universes fastest ship.

So why do people make this claim?

The use of the term Light Speed in Star Wars has to be an inaccurate for the travel seen to be realistic. Unless, in the Star Wars universe, the speed of light is much faster than in ours, or Star systems are ridiculously close to each other. At light speed, it would take over 4 years to travel to Proxima Centaurus, which is the closest star other than the sun.

I think it's more likely that the phrase is just that in the Star Wars universe, a phrase. One that doesn't actually describe what is happening, but one that is recognised enough for others to understand what actually is meant.

... or, light speed doesn't actually mean the same thing as the speed of light there.

There's no consistency within neither the ST nor the SW universe on how fast things go, so comparing them one against the other seems like a particularly pointless exercise.

They all move at the speed of plot anyway...

Well no, 'speed of light' and 'faster than light' are muttered loads of times. Trek ships are faster.

Since when has terminology been consistent (in most) Sci-Fi.

Go back to TOS and they can cover thousands of light years in days or not depending on the needs of the story. Head to TMP and they can go around 4ly/day by VOY that's dropped to 3ly/day.

As for SW, perhaps .5 past light means that it can reach 1.5c which is still to slow for interstellar travel hence hyperspace travel.

How long did it take for them to get to the Alderaan system from Tatooine? It seemed like only a few hours at best.

Please provide detailed citations and context.

To name a couple:

Han Solo EP IV - "I'm gonna make the jump to light speed".

Archer Broken Bow - "Neptune and back 6 minutes" - way faster than light.

Riker STFC - "Discovered how to travel faster than light".

Seriously? That's all the evidence you need right there. It's like if you cycled to London and I took a Concord then I called you a liar when you said your method of travel was slower.

Riker STFC - "Discovered how to travel faster than light".

Nope. Inadmissible.
What does Han know how fast he's going anyway?
He didn't even finish school and he thinks parsecs are a unit of time...

C3PO, Vader and Needa call it Lightspeed in TESB, as does FINN in TLJ.

Also the Parsec thing proves the writers don't know what they'r

"Light speed" in Star wars is probably short hand to any spead equal or faster then light.

That’s a cop out really, why would they do that? Do you go around telling people you go ‘crawling speed’ on the motorway?
