Why do all the promotions say "see how the original crew got together"

Robert DeSoto

Lieutenant Commander
Isnt this movie taking place in some alternate timeline? So we're not really seeing how the real Enterprise crew got together. It was probably completely different.

Personally I would love to see how the original crew really got together. Alternate timelines/universes are fun, but its not the same crew. I mean, I love Intendant Kira, but she isn't Colonel Kira.

The movie looks like its gonna be awesome, but since these characters dont actually turn out to be the same as the ones we saw in TOS cuz theyre part of a different universe, well to me, its just not the same. I just dont care about wut happens to them to the same extent. Of course, that doesnt mean I'm not gonna like the movie, but just wondering how many of you guys feel the same way

I'll be interested in your reaction to the film. Having written a little in the Trek universe and pitched to the TV shows for over ten years, I was COMPLETELY entertained by this movie.

Won't say more, but will drift back through next week after more have seen it.

If I recall, "Sliding Doors" was a popular and thought-provoking movie, and the TNG episode "Parallels" was very entertaining.

I've seen the new ST movie and I was thrilled by it. Give it a chance.

I guess really when you think about it, the only persons storyline that changes up til the point where Spock messes around with it a bit, is Kirks storyline. I presume that everything that happened with the crew meeting up happened in similar ways (and as we have no evidence to suggest otherwise, it could be close to the canon storyline).

You're nitpicking from a Star Trek fan's point of view.

Once again, the advertising isn't directed towards us, it's directed at casual/non fans. They don't care if it's in an alternate timeline. The marketing people are just trying to get a simple message across.

Re: Why do all the promotions say "see how the original crew got toget

I think this is very relevant to the OP's question

The fact that you are using an altered timeline has some fans wondering if this is still our crew, or is this some alternative crew?

Alex Kurtzman: The characters have not changed as characters. They still have all the personality traits that we know of the original bridge crew. I think the gravest mistake would have been to try and reinvent the characters. That would have made everybody, including ourselves, very unhappy. It would have felt like violating sacred ground. This was a way to stay true to canon, and to take the stories in a new direction

Orci: Their souls are intact. And we would argue that we would have settled on some of the same character introductions, with or without the incursion from the future. In our minds some of the events overlap completely in both timelines.

Even though things are different in this timeline, like Kirk coming aboard the Enterprise first as a cadet, by the end of the movie every one of the original bridge crew end up where they are supposed to be. Is there some kind of notion that it is their destiny to be on that bridge, regardless of what timeline you are on?

Kurtzman: Yes. In fact there was one version of the script where Kirk points out that it is incredibly odd that they all sort of turned as they would have. Nimoy Spock tells Kirk ‘I knew this character as this person and that character as that person’ and Kirk says ‘wow, those characters are exactly the same ones that I know’ and Spock says something like ‘Fascinating, that must be the timestream’s way of trying to mend itself.’

Orci: It is a nod to destiny. And there is still something like that in the film.

Since I asume we will see all future movies or tv shows in this new alternate timeline I think there is a reason to care about these versions of "TOS" crew. You could even say that the orginal timeline's story has been told and thus this is a chance to see a new trekverse that we might end up caring about just as much as we cared about the other trekverse.

To my own mind, this is the origin of this particular universe's version of "Kirk's Seven" got together. Well worth watching in its own right, but as a fan, I'm not going along with the official Paramount promotional line.

The characters have not changed as characters. They still have all the personality traits that we know of the original bridge crew.

Except for Kirk, I suppose. If I understand it, this Kirk never lived through Tarsus IV massacre, which must've been a major formative experience of *our* Kirk. Surviving a genocide can do serious things with people. Ask Holocaust survivors how it changed their lives.

Re: Why do all the promotions say "see how the original crew got toget

I think the folks marketing this movie found it a little easier, a little peppier to say "See how the original crew got together" rather than "See how this crew, which based on the original series crew but different because of some kind of time travel/alternate universe space-time continuum jazz, got together."

Rolls off the tongue easier for the casual fan.

Try printing that tagline on a bunch of action figures :)

Semantics

Re: Why do all the promotions say "see how the original crew got toget

Maybe the way the crew got together in the real time line is boring?

Re: Why do all the promotions say "see how the original crew got toget

^that's possible, but we really didn't know much about it, except for in the novels. it was never really canon as to how exactly they all got together. suffice to say that it wasn't all at the same time.

McCoy and Spock's story in the movie though, seem to be pretty much the same as in canon.
