Why didn't Voyager head to the Gamma Q?

There are many different diagrams you can find online about the Quadrants and they all vary based on their information, but I found this rough looking one which illustrates in a simple fashion the main point I wanted to address.

Voyager left DS9 right before they got tossed into the Delta Quadrant so they knew the wormhole existed. Also, at the time there was no war with the Dominion, let alone any knowledge of the Dominion in the first place.... So why didn't Voyager do the most logical thing and take the shortest route possible to get home?

.... Which would have been to head into the Gamma Quadrant and straight for the Wormhole to end up right where they started, rather than fly all the way back to Earth in the most ant-like-mentality path possible?

It would still have taken 40 or 50 years to reach the Bajoran Wormhole, barring shortcuts. Even on that chart you show (which is hugely out of proportion in its placement of Bajor), the distance from Ocampa to the Idran system is about equal to the distance from Ocampa to the Borg transwarp hub from "Endgame." It really wouldn't have made that much difference.

And there would be no guarantee the wormhole would still exist when they got there. Imagine going that far out of the way for nothing?

All I can add is this is a common question. I've seen it asked at least twice before in the less than 2 years I've been here.

Berman used to commonly be seen screaming at the fanbase during Q and As: "It's equidistant! Equidistant you stupid little ####! I try and I try, but nothing is good enough for you ungreatful bastards! EQI-####ing-DISTANT!"

There are multiple home videos from conventions where you can see him spitting and taking his pants off in response to his question again... No seriously: Equidistant" was his party line at conventions, even though he didn't have shit to back it up.

I think the truth is that he never saw any DS9 and didn't know about the Wormhole, because Rick spent all his time building forts out of stacks of cash in the breakroom.

I believe Captain Kate also seen it as an opportunity to chart unknown space. If she'd just hopped over to the Gamma Quadrant and hot-tailed it back to the Bajorian Wormhole from there, then Starfleet's knowledge of the Delta Quadrant wouldn't have been expanded in the way it was.

It's a different show now.

It used to be high tech, sleek and modern.

Now it's almost as laughable as Lost in Space.

I'm sorry, I can't tell -- are you joking or is this true?

They only way to avoid something becoming dated is to set it in the past.

Period pieces are eternal.

Besides "modern" shows don't know how to laugh at selves because they are on the wrong side of history as far as the dictation and redictation of cool goes.

I was listening to one of the last made radio adaptations of Hitch-hikers Guide to he Galaxy, and the "beginning bit" where the book calls us monkeys for being obsessed with digital watches wasn't there any more, the dialogue had been changed to (this was circa 2004.) we're all idiot monkeys for obsessing on "novelty ringtones" for our cellphones.

:)

[true]In this forum a long time ago, a poster reported seeing a very tired Rick Berman at a convention, saying that the DS9, the Bajoran wormhole exit point and Caretaker were all equidistant as if he had had to say that very statement constantly.[/true]

It really sounded like a "Why Does God Need a Starship?" moment.

I'd say more so idiot monkeys for falling head first into a city fountain because we're obsessed with our phone relationships. :-)

Voyager may not look timeless because of our views of the future change. It still looks very cool to me except that giant camera of the doctors.

My answer would be:

We wanted them to run into the Borg, okay and you know about gamma Q, so let's have an adventure!

Kate said if it were her she would have gone the Gamma Route. Lol, see Rick! Practicality blinded us to want an adventure of the unknown! You made the Capt look like she can't navigate Google galaxy maps.
