Why didn't Beyond do better at the Box Office?

When it comes to the international gross it is also a factor, that the exchange rates changed since 2013. Nowadays the Euro, British Pound, Australian and Canadian Dollar, Chinese Yuan and Russian Ruble are all worth less compared to the US dollar than in the past. So nearly all the big foreign markets are affected and who knows how many of the smaller ones, too.

Could this film have been released in the fall? There do not seem to be as many tentpole movies there. If it could, would it have been more money, thus being more successful?

And, it is important how much money STB is earning, as Paramount is having struggling financially.

A "tentpole" film does not get released in the fall. Indeed, the fall is generally seen as the time for artsy films vying for an Oscar or a dumping ground for movies studios have no faith in.

Or by "fall" do you mean November? November does typically see tentpole releases, mind you this November is already loaded with a new MCU film, a Harry Potter prequel, and a Disney animated film. To say nothing of the fact that a November release for Beyond means they would have missed the 50th anniversary.

I don't know about anyone else but for me at least it was like Trek was an inconvenience for the theatre. My local theatre actually cancelled their midnight showings. I finally had to go see it at a drive in.

I'm not sure how many people were turned off by that first trailer but I sure was. It was so bad (I didn't mind the use of Sabotage on it), mind numbing awful that I was not enthused all about seeing it. I didn't even feel like reading about so I just about never came to this forum. With the previous films I was here all the time. I was almost going to wait to rent it but I really wanted to see it in the theater since I've seen the previous 12 movies in theaters. I finally decided to go yesterday. I usually go opening weekend. It was my least favorite of the reboot movies but I really liked it. Things I hated in the trailer I pretty much loved it in the movie.

Well, I watched Suicide Squad. It is a terrible thought to think this film might earn more money than STB. SS is atrocious and the DC Universe is a effin' mess.

It sounds like Paramount did not have a good date to release STB this year. It was competing in a summer market saturated by tentpole movies. I have read of something like this happening as there are more and more tentpole films vying for a fractured market.

Suicide Squad was always guaranteed to earn more money than Beyond. It's a major comic book film with Batman in it.

What didn't you like about the movie?
I used to like ID the best but after seeing it today I think it has fallen third in the Kelvin timeline movies. Not by too much - I really want see more about these characters

The three biggest overseas markets, where the Star Trek films made over $10 million, were Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, and China (for the last film, with over $57 million). The box office went up in all three markets for the second film, then fell drastically for the third film. For example, in the United Kingdom, the trend is, in millions in dollars: $35 (ST), $39 (STID), $13 (STB). Australia and Germany box offices for STB were below $10 million, when both were over $15 million for the last film. The coming markets, save for China, will each add less than $10 million to the pot, based on past results. So, China is the wild card.

Based on the results, I do not see this film making more than $400 million. This will be just good enough for it to be considered a success for Paramount, so there might be a sequel.

And Beyond is looking to make substantially less money on a similar budget. That does not inspire confidence.

It's relevant to us because it affects whether we get another Trek film, and what sort of film it will be.

But, here's the thing. We don't have all the facts to make judgements in this case. Sorry, the average fan doesn't have access to Paramount's financials to determine if BEY is a "success" or a "disappointment."

So, instead of worrying about what I can't control, I'm going to watch the film as many times as I can in the theaters, buy it on DVD and let Paramount decide if it is worth it.

If they decide to stop at BEY I still got a fantastic film to watch again and again. Well worth the price of admission, I'd say.

It's currently standing at 171 million worldwide, China is the only large market where it is due to open. Where is this other 230million dollars coming from I ask?

STB is still climbing but at this stage, it's hard to see it getting to 7th place of out 13 for box office returns.

I think this movie will end up in the 250 - 300 million range world wide. I wouldn't call that a flop, but it isn't a success either and I'm sure with those numbers Paramount will be highly disappointed. However, for a Star Trek movie it isn't that bad, just not what Paramount wants.

300m. Maybe 350 if its lucky and china goes nuts for it? That's what we realistically looking at now? Wow. The lowest grossing out of the 3 films when its the 50th anniversary is quite an achievement. Be like Skyfall only doing about 500m. The marketing just didn't get it right particularly that 1st trailer (that the entire population of the planet saw in front of TFA)
