Why didn't Beyond do better at the Box Office?

I think the rush to get that clearly rushed teaser in front of the Force Awakens crowd is what's done the damage here.

I don't. I think the fact they put pretty much every important scene in various trailers sunk it. There was only one surprise in the entire movie that I didn't know about going into it.

I hated that first trailer. There was literally nothing in it that made it look like a must see film, though you do have a point - too many films are guilty of giving the game away these days (Terminator Genesys is a perfect example). What is going through their heads? There was no need to spoil the destruction of the Enterprise was there? They could have put quick images of it entering Yorktown and a couple of bits of it battling the swarm without giving the game away. Had I gone into the film unspoilt on this basis, the destruction would have been utterly shocking, as it was a superb sequence - probably the best in the whole film.

Yeah, I gotta say, that first Trailer nearly put me off the movie completely....and then they just let that negative feeling sit and fester for months. They should have immediately gone into damage control mode and put out a trailer that did better represent the movie. Whoever was in charge of marketing for this movie failed terribly.

Precisely. The second and third trailers were excellent, totally different in style and tone, they made me want to watch it so much more. I guess a lot of it was down to the schedule - they didn't have the footage available to put out a better trailer at the time. As I've mentioned before, you can see unfinished FX in the first teaser, it's especially noticeable in the scotty dangling off the cliff scene.

When I look at the third trailer, it looks like it was pointed at old people. The slow ballad, Kirk lamenting career choices, slow motion shots. Nothing there that is going to hook a younger crowd.

Suicide Squad definitely seems like it is marketed far better towards the youth crowd...

Cool music that ramps up in the right spots. There are reasons why this will do $140 million this weekend, while Beyond continues to struggle. Fandom definitely gets in the way of Star Trek being successful on the big screen. Even when what is being presented is what they are asking for.

New numbers for Germany are out. Relative small fall for the second week. I guess the first week really suffered, because of hot weather.

Moviegoers:

Beyond
first weekend: 303,391
overall after first week: 344,583
second weekend: 222,248 (-27 %)
overall after second week: 717,469

STID
first weekend: 446,915
overall after first week: 526,828
second weekend: 246,776 (-45 %)
overall after second week: 905,758
at the end of the year: 1,516,939

ST09
first weekend: 421,593 (I think previews counted, too.)
second weekend: ~ 189,000 (-55 %)
overall after second week: 760,136
at the end of the year: 1,272,813

those trailers make it look great. yet all I hear is how terrible it is. its the opposite of STB!

I agree that Beyond is likely the better movie. But opening weekend is the culmination of your marketing efforts. In that regard, Suicide Squad has blown Beyond out of the water.

Warner Bros. has simply done a better job of selling their movie to the public.

If I'm Paramount, I'm looking to steal some of the marketing people from Disney and Warner Brothers. They definitely get bang for their buck out of advertising.

Hopefully this iteration of Trek will get at least one more chance. Like how we got TUC after Final Frontier financially underperformed. One last movie.

We won't know for a few months yet because of the staggered international release of Beyond. Paramount is likely going review it's options going forward. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be another Trek movie but the question is what kind of movie will that be.

There are some advantages for those who want another Kelvin movie. Paramount has fewer large franchises than other studios and they're having revenue problems. Despite it's lackluster box office, Beyond remains Paramount's most successful movie so far in 2016 and that could go along way to determining the next movie.

BTW I was reading last night, and of course I can't find the article today, that Beyond's budget was originally closer inline with ST09 but that it ran over due to the absorbed pre-production from the original Orci script and from the re-shoots in March which added Shohreh Aghdashloo's character.

This is hardly something that's started "these days." The destruction of the Enterprise was in all the theatrical trailers for Trek III in the 80s, and that comes further in that movie than the Enterprise's destruction comes in Beyond.

Although in the case of Terminator Genesys the test audiences had no reaction to the plot twist in that movie so the decision was made to use it as a means of promoting the film instead of keeping it a secret, believing seeing it out of context would drum up more excitement.

Maybe a teaser celebrating the 50th (like VI did for the 25th) would've been a positive thing and a better way to go than the Beastie Boys one

I guess I'm one of those older people STB's 3rd trailer was aimed at then. These Suicide Squad trailers are really not my bag at all, to be honest I'm utterly bored with the over saturation of superhero movies. Give me Trek any day. On balance I think the second STB trailer was the best of the three. Watching the 1st teaser again, I guess I don't hate it, I just don't like it that much either.

There is no doubt Paramount made a blunder of its advertising for Beyond. In many ways Paramount acted like it had a dud on its hands. The only buzz surrounding Beyond was negative until about a month before the movie came out which is far too late to get people excited.

The first teaser trailer was poorly received and Paramount should have immediately responded by putting out a new one. I remember the first time I saw that trailer, it was the only time I had ever seriously considered not seeing a Trek movie in theaters. Not taking advantage of the 50th anniversary was another big mistake.

I'll also say this, I liked Beyond but I question if it was the right movie for the 50th anniversary. Star Trek VI despite being a small movie had more of a feeling of occasion to it - likely because it was being marketed as the last TOS movie.

This. I am a member of many, many different "fandoms" and Star Trek fans are by far the most entitled, whiny, and impossible to please.

It's discouraging.

I'd have gone with Orcis version :)

I saw this movie with my dad, who is a Star Trek fan from TOS first run. He loved the film and it had plenty of moments were the new cast performed just like the old one.

I think that the marketing is more the thing, because the film had plenty of little moments that all culminated in celebrating Trek. The film is perfect for the 50th, while still being its own film.
