Why did you choose your login name and avatar?

Well, I think the title pretty much sums up the question. There are a lot of interesting nicknames around here, and interesting avatars. I was wondering why you chose what you did.

For me, j,w, and b are my initials, and my publisher likes me to use my latest book cover as an avatar (the latest one being about the LOTR films.) How about you?

Wow, you are so much cooler than me, jwb.

When I first joined the board, I was startraveller776. It was a handle I used at another site. And yes, I misspelled traveler. 776 is the month and year of my birth. Everyone around these parts called me star for short and when T'Bonz allowed username changes, I was one of the first in line to shorten it.

As for my avatar... well, I change that all the time. This week it's Mirror Universe Soval from ENT. Mainly because I'm one of those said little fanfic writers and I'm working in the MU these days. (Will be breaking out of that genre soon, though to move onto original work, so that I can get published... just gotta finish the stories I've started first).

Usually my avatars are from ENT, though I have a few choice ones from STXI. On my non-trek sites, my avatar is always of myself. LOL

I don't remember where I first used it, but the full original version was "Guartho the Sane," a take-off of Douglas Adams's character "Wonko the Sane." I'm not sure how I came up with "Guartho." I guess I just wanted something with the same number of syllables and a similar ending sound to go before "the Sane." Later it got shortened out of laziness. And, I'll admit it, it's more true this way.

My Optimus Prime avatar is ripped-off from a web comic I liked called "lil' formers." I thought one particular comic of Optimus Prime complaining about the then yet-to-come Michael Bay movie on an internet forum was a perfect avatar.

I used to change my avatar whenever something shiny caught my attention. I changed away from Optimus once for about two or three days and then changed back because I didn't recognize my own posts so Optimus is here to stay now.

I was (see my signature) known as "madmatthias", however since I used this for several different places (and my real name isn't even Matthias), I decided to change it to "Captain M" with M being my first name initial and the Captain bit just being something Trek related (guess I just wanted something new and unique for TrekBBS)

As for my Avatar, well its from TWOK when Kirk and McCoy enter the bridge and Spock is sat in the Captain's Chair, commanding the ship, I dunno why but to me this is just uber cool, with Spock as the Captain and Kirk the observing Admiral

The name comes from a few years ago when I was watching loads of samurai and yakuza movies. Samurai are "knights" for lack of a better term who serve a master. Yakuza are gangsters. Ronin are "men on the wave." Mercenaries without masters. Going where the flow takes them, so to speak.

I also enjoy the multiple meanings of the word "wave." I enjoy and collect music, though I'm not quite the guy from High Fidelity. I have no interest in surfing, but I do love swimming.

The avatar is a Patrick Nagel, who was a very popular painter/illustrator in the 80s, most famous for his work in Playboy magazine. You couldn't throw a stick in the mid 80s without hitting one of his prints. He painted mostly women, so this is one of his few males. His influences include Art Deco, and Japanese wood cuts, two things I love myself.

I chose the lolcat king because I like silly avatars. LitmusDragon was my attempt at a kind of creative or ambiguous screen name. It's kind of stuck.

Chaos Descending was the name that I came up with for the metal band some friends in high school and I were going to form. It all went wrong when we failed for 20 straight years running to actually learn how to play any instruments. We did write some song lyrics though, unfortunately they aren't that great, and rely heavily on understanding some extremely esoteric in-jokes amongst we folks that wrote the lyrics.

My avatar is my home state's state flag. I am a fan of my home state, as well as the design of its state flag.

Kestra because it's a Trek name and I think it's a pretty one. I have Kaylee as my av because I thought the person who created it did quite a good job, and I really like Kaylee's character. She's just so cheerful!

I had just read 1984 and seen the movie not too long before joining so I had it on the brain, so to say. Since it only appears once in the book I thought I was being clever and my username would be kind of an easter egg to people who read 1984. Turns out a lot of people on various internet forums have this username or some variation thereof so I guess I'm not as clever or unique as I thought.

I change my avatar all the time. I'm just in a BSG mood right now.

*waves* Another Arizonian here (though adopted -- originally from elsewhere)... at least until Spring when the Army moves us on.

Simple reasons... I like Deep Space Nine. I like Cardassians. My fave character is Damar. Thats it. *L*

thestrangequark because I'm a physics groupie. The avatar is from a favorite childhood movie and the insanity of him suits me.

Well, for those who don't know, the Nasat are an alien race in the Star Trek novels - a race I'm quite fond of.

When I joined up, it was mostly for the Trek lit forum, and I wanted to jokingly exaggerate my love of continuity. I like it when the novels all reference one another and work as part of one over-arching fictional reality, so to speak. So I decided my user name and avatar were going to be an insane axe-murderer who is reduced to frothing rage and random violence when a continuity error is made. :) The Nasat are a peaceful, non-confrontational race who are, if anything, known for being overly cautious and hate taking risks or sticking their neck out. If there was any race in Trek lit less likely to produce raging killers, it's the Nasat. So I chose them. Plus, as I said, I like them.

Starbreaker is a planet destroying technology from Stephen Baxter's Xeelee books. My avatar changes often...

I like Star Wars, especially Sidious, so I put that in my screen name along with my birthday. My avatar is currently of my love Olivia Dunham although I'll probably change it soon because I don't like having one for too long.

Sojourner has been my online presence since before most people could get online. I like the word and it's connotations. My avatar came at a time when I was enjoying "House" and identifying with the character. It may change soon.

Jono is my nickname in rl.

As for the pic, no special meaning. It is a placeholder until next month when it will be more Halloweeny.

My screename is my middle name, the one that everybody calls me in real life. It was easier to remember that way. My avatar is just because I really, really, really love Babylon 5.

But, it'll be changed eventually because I love other stuff too.
