why did they not name tom paris nick locarno?

I don't remember it mentioned in Caretaker. Didn't Janeway address him as 'Tom Paris' in the New Zealand scene?

May have been mentioned elsewhere, though.

He could have two middle names as well. A stretch, but no more than chronic lookalikes.

Or 'Nick' could have been named after someone he knew or liked. you never know.

I always figured the reason was because his original character got booted out of Starfleet while still a Cadet for his actions, which didn't really match up to Paris's background story..... although I believe it could have been worked around to fit the old character into the story, the royalties thing I guess would put a stinker on that plan.

Maybe he could have changed his name during his time with the Maquis, then they wouldn't have to worry about using the same name in Voyager.

Speaking of actors playing dual roles in Star Trek, anybody else notice how Tim Russ played a few roles in other seriesez before playing Tuvok? I believe he was on the episode where the Enterprise D was getting cleaned and Picard got stuck on the ship while him and his crew were trying to nab something off the ship.

Actually looking through his Wiki, he played a number of other roles:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Russ#Star_Trek_and_other_roles

Busy fellow he was.... he even applied to play as LaForge

I guess when it comes to actors in Star Trek playing other roles later on, you can't really rely on consistency.

Of course, we can always argue that Paris is Locarno - and that enrolling at Starfleet Academy under a false name was one of his more harebrained schemes for getting back at his father.

Timo Saloniemi

You can get near identical cousins, or an illegitimate half brother.

Harder to explain Tuvok and his Generations Human being at the academy together though :D
I had Nick and Tom being twin bros in a Mirror Universe Voyager tale concept...and smuggler-Owen has to fess up to partner-son Tom about his presumed-dead sibling who's been a scalphunter for the Alliance...

^^
I hate to destroy that scenario but wasn't his middle name Eugene? I think it was revealed in "Caretaker".
Yep, it was Eugene. Kathryn spoke it, in the near-the-end scene in which she's informing him she's granting a field commission to TEP...

Assumed name because his father was an admiral?

Transpoter accident.

Changeling inflitrator?

time travel accident.

Spy.

Tom was under assignment from Section 31 to create an accident that would trigger Wesley's Space warping abilities in a controlled situation for the purpose of reverse engineering the entire proccess?

Nick Locarno was the traveler trying to get Wesley kicked out of the academy before some one abuses his abilities.

The Parent Trap 47.

Stuff.
