Why did Seven keep wearing the catsuit?

I just mentioned this in one of the other threads, but I think breaking the fourth wall was a big problem. For me, the effect of Seven was like watching a regular Star Trek episode and then suddenly having this bimbo from a model magazine show up in the middle of the story. It was very frustrating. Plus B'Elanna Torres was a lot hotter.

I'm not sure I'd describe Seven as a "bimbo". Yes, she was showing off her stunning good looks a lot (and that's something I can't complain about), but I do think she had some good stories to balance the sex appeal. And there were characters from before VOY like Deanna Troi and Jadzia Dax that played up the sex angle, so she wasn't really that controversial.

Which is strange since in "Dark Frontier" she had wires sticking out of her arms when playing velocity with Janeway. I guess the suits didn't like the wired look!

Don't remember that; got any screencaps? I just can't help finding it a little bit disturbing to think that despite her beauty, underneath her suit Seven is scarred.

Actually I had the episode wrong. It's "Hope and Fear". You can see the wiring in her arm in one of the photos here:

I have to say, even with the arm wiring, she's still very beautiful in those photos. :)

Men in the future (TNG Season One at least) wear mini skirts.

Why is it that the first trek lad I want to see in one of things is the Sisko?

He'd have to wrap his diddle around his waist like a belt so it didn't slap against his knees while he was pontificating righteousness against the DQ baddies or Dukat, and some how I think he'd win more with the fisticuffs because the weekly big bad would be walking backwards away the emissaries intermittently exposed Junk as he was winding up his haymaker baring down on his foes.

Sex sells.

Voyager didn't sell sex.

Struggle as I might, and I usually don't have to struggle at all to find sex, I just barely saw any of the cast of Voyager as sexual beings, and nothing else they did or said in the course of Seven years helped their case in any way.

 my eyes!!! they're on fire!!!

not sure how I'm supposed to work with that image seared into my mind . . . .

Exactly. Not only that but she wasn' wearing the catsuit either. ;)

Ryan looked good in any of the normal outfits she wore in the series too, like her Singer outfit in "Killing Game", the summer dress she had in Ransom's hallucinations in "Equinox" and her Fleet uniform in "Relativity".

I agree. One of the "rites of adolescence" that we women go through is experimenting with different types of clothing styles to discover what looks best on us. To a certain extent this continues throughout our lives. It's pretty much an art of "self-discovery".

I would find it normal for Seven as she starts to recover her humanity that she would experiment with different types of clothing. Since she didn't have to wear a uniform then why not? The fact she stuck with the utilitarian catsuit says she wasn't yet at the point of developing her own style, imo.

Not everyone goes through that "rite of adolescence." There are people who really don't give a damn what they wear and never have.

Seven is a creature of habit.

Of course, had she been given a modicum of privacy, rather than being stored like a piece of machinery in the cargo bay, where people can and did walk in and out without notice, perhaps she would have progressed on such matters faster.

I always assumed that moving to quarters was something that couldn't be done physically because her regeneration unit was so bulky. They kept all four or five stations even before the Borg kids arrived, which made me think that it must have to stay together in order to work properly.

I also assume that she would have to share quarters with another crew member, as the lower decks characters did in "Good Shepherd," and she might have found that more distasteful than being in the more "public" cargo bay. I'm trying to remember when we saw people barge in on her while regenerating. I remember the captain doing it, maybe Naomi, and maybe the doctor. Did we see other random crew members going into the cargo bay while Seven was regenerating? Just curious, because I don't remember.

Neelix, Chakotay, Harry.

And when Neelix went in, he was looking for a container--nothing terribly important.

As for quarters... Given that Voyager wasn't falling apart at the seams, and that they could construct a shuttle, one would think that they could construct a few bulkheads to give Seven some privacy.

Yet, they didn't. :borg:

No, they didn't.

Perhaps Seven was onto something in her holodeck fantasy. Perhaps no one thought her *worthy* of such things as quarters or a wardrobe until she was "fully human"--i.e. no longer Borg at all.

Yet those are the very things that people point to and say, "Well, she's obviously immature because she didn't pursue them."

I wouldn't be pursuing a sense of style either, if I lacked a closet.

Well, he's an ass.

I remember the Borg kids regenerating along side her?

Roomates?

Did none of them get their own rooms?

I don't think so.

I could imagine Seven exiling those twins tot he other side of the cargo bay to stop their jibbering.

They spent a lot of money on those sets, and they did keep the Borg in close proximity. More importantly, they were a constant reminder that these characters were special.

And, hey, the whole cargo bay was basically a closet.

I always assumed the same thing. That being said there was no reason why crewmembers couldn't contact Seven before entering the cargo bay in case she was changing catsuits or something - unless she had to do that in sickbay for some medical reason.

Speaking of the borg kids they didn't have to wear catsuits...

I believe she said in-show that the catsuit was more comfortable for her, seeing as she was so used to close skin-contact.

I liken it to being used to baggy pants; after that, any 'classic' pair of jeans will feel uncomfortably tight, almost painfully so. Or the other way around, of course. One has to make a concerted effort in order to 'unlearn' the used sensation, in order to feel comfortable in a different type of clothes.

Because, of course, changing clothes is the only reason someone might desire some privacy--or the courtesy of knocking before entering.

Which no one provided. Including the captain.

Apparently, they viewed their Borg as more cargo than person.

They hadn't been fully assimilated and didn't have complete body armor.

Plus, there are regs regarding how long child actors can work--6 hours in makeup & costume would be more than their entire day. ;)

Because of the young male viewers TPTB tought were the main audience of Voyager. ;)

Okay, kidding aside, I would have actually liked to see her being "stripped" form her Borg stuff a little longer and perhaps getting an uniform in the end of the series. But the catsuit is also alright for me.

actually, your 'kidding' was right on target. That is exactly why she stayed in the suit. The 'in-story' reason? Who cares...

Rob

At least Seven had different catsuits in design and color.

I happened to be watching "11:59" the other day. The crew is sitting around talking about their families, having coffee/tea and snacks while they're off duty, yet all of them are still wearing their duty uniforms. For 7 years, these folks never wore an other clothes while off duty!
