Why did Buffy fail?

The movie IS canon.

When Buffy is first checking into Sunnyvale...they mention she burned down her last schools gym and she mentioned it was full of Vamp...

But that actually contradicts the movie, since the gym didn't burn down in the filmed version. There are a number of ways in which the film and the series are contradictory. Here's a list:

So no, the movie's version of events is not canonical in the series' universe. Rather, the series incorporates elements of Whedon's original unfilmed script, which told the same basic story in a different way. Dark Horse Comics did an adaptation of Whedon's script, which is pretty much what Buffy's origin would've been like in the series canon.

Just to give the Cult of Whedon™ and aenurism....I greatly prefer the movie to the series.

I must be in that cult and just can't see straight because I see more references to the cult from people than I actually ever see examples of cultish behavior.

I guess you are.

Do you think people all over the internet just randomly decided to brand your fandom?

Do you see it on this board? I see much more cult of personality associated with JJ/Trek and RDM/BSG or even Peter Jackson than I do with Whedon.

I like how nobody can be a fan of someone's work without being accused of being a cult member.

Yup. I've been called a member of the Joss-cult because of my love for Buffy.

Yet at the same time, never really cared for Angel, think Firefly is boring, and think Dollhouse is stupid.

Oh, The Whedonites have calmed down now. A leaders failures tend to that. But when Buffy and Angel were at their heights, they were fucking batshit and a half. JMS and Ron Moore fans weren't as bloodthirsty as Whedon fans. Cross board flame wars. Cyber-bullying. 100-page long essays on why Joss Whedon is a better writer then Bill Shakespeare. The Spike/Dawn rape fanfic. No, they deserve their bad reputation.

And lest we forget how they relentlessly pushed Firefly DVDs on anyone with a pulse.

Assholes on the internet are assholes. It doesn't mean that everyone else who happens to be a fan of the same thing as the assholes are also culpable.

No, they deserve their bad reputation.

The members of a group in general never deserve the bad reputation of a few extremist members of that group. Please remember that stereotypes are lazy and unfair. Every group is made up of individuals who are different from one another. Just because a few of those individuals make all the noise and draw all the attention doesn't mean they're typical of the group.

The first five seasons were great. Season six had it's moments, but season seven was 22 episodes running off a story made for 13. Not to mention the character assassination that occured for several characters towards the end of the show.

I quite like Buffy The Vampire Slayer...I watched it after I had seen the first or second season of Buffy The TV Series and was shocked at the differences..it wasn't until much later that i found out why things were so different as has alreayd been explained. I think one of the comics becasically retconned the movie as did an episode of Buffy (the where we discover that Angel had been watching Buffy from the very begining thanks to Whistler informing him that another SLayer had been chosen).

As for the original director and producers wanting to create another franchise...I was outraged when I first read that story. This is bascially Joss's world, but if they want to go ahead and have their own little alternate universe to play around in go for it. It's worked with Star Trek, it will most likely work with Bryan Singer's BSG when that movie comes out. Reboots are inevitble so I'm for it. I just don't know if I'll be watching it or not.

I like that comic. I like to pretend that certain elements of Buffy's origin story happened in the series canon, but not exactly the way we saw them in that (terrible) movie.

Oh, and the idea of the Kuzui's wanting to do another Buffy reboot sickens me. It may do decent box office, but without any involvement from Joss or the series cast, it will SUCK.

Truly one of the most stupid ideas in the history of stupid ideas. However, it reminds me of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich always talking about THEIR intended sequel to the original Stargate movie. An idea which will probably never happen, as the series is far more popular now. Hopefully, Kuzui's idea will never get beyond pre-production.

And I've never got the hate for Buffy seasons six and seven. Rewatching the show on DVD recently, I have found I've enjoyed the last two seasons a lot more this time.

Sorrry if that came off that way, I wasn't trying to imply that fans of the above are cult members, more like I didn't see how they were much different than the Whedon fans.

I should add to my post that even though I no longer have any problem with them doing the Buffy reboot...I wholeheardedly agree that without consultation or involvement from Joss this project will suck.

Usually I'd agree with you. But you didn't see what I saw. The massive numbers of Spuffy fans are evidence enough that they weren't a minority.

Be that as it may, [Buffy]That was then. This is now.[/Buffy]

Trying to drag the problems of the past into current discussions doesn't really help anyone.

Trying to drag the problems of the past into current discussions doesn't really help anyone. I mean, you're the only one in the thread who has used the term "Spuffy". Please don't use it again, the last thing we need is yet another Whedon thread derailed by haters who don't know when to let go. Which is what happens *every single time* someone mentions that pairing.

I was there when Whedon's career was at its height, and I always thought that the folks accusing Whedon fans of being a cult were exaggerating and starting more of those fights than the Whedon fans.

Dude, Christopher joined this BBS in 2001. I joined it in 2002. You joined it in 2007. Both Christopher and I have been around here a while, and we've seen plenty of genre fans and Whedon fans and how they acted. Please don't try to portray yourself as being someone who's seen more than others.
