Why are people attracted to movies made by Michael Bay

I enjoyed Bad Boys (I and II), the Rock and Armaggedon. They're by no means Oscar bait but they are fun action flicks. Even parts of Pearl Harbor were enjoyable, even if the film as a whole failed.

His movies are like cinematic junk food. Once in a while it feels good to pig out, as long as you don't make a steady diet of it.

Generally who directed the film is one of the more useful barometers of whether or not one wants to see a movie, right up there with the critical reaction to a film.

I think it causes initial interest - for example, I am psyched for the Avengers film because I am a huge Joss Whedon fan, even if I never cared for the comic. But if Whedon decided to release a movie based on the life of Amelia Earhart, would I go? Probably!

But we are not the average movie goer. I don't think most people realize who is involved in the behind the scenes in most films. It goes right over their heads.

I guess I expect more from my action flicks. If I wanted to see annoying characters and blatant racism, I'd watch a SciFi original. There are too many good action films without these elements for me to give directors like Bay my hard earned cash.

Unfortunately, I am in the minority.

I've only seen his Transformers movies because of the giant alien robots in them.

I have zero interest in his other movies because I hate how he directs action scenes and his dumb sense of humor. Bay seems to have an obsession with directing military porn. Do we really need twenty second shots of the military, soldiers and vehicles?

I have a feeling the majority of movie-goers couldn't give a shit about directors, and really, they shouldn't. People should be attracted to a movie because the previews make it look entertaining, regardless of who is involved in making it.

I disagree. Directors have a huge influence over the quality of a movie. In fact, movies are often seen as the medium of the director as he/she has control over everything from the choice of the script to the re-writes to the day-to-day activities of the film-making process. Choosing a film based upon the director is not much different than choosing a book based upon the writer.

Previews, on the other hand, are often misleading and designed entirely by marketers who care little for the film. They're a decent way to sparking interest, but they're not the only way of figuring out a film's potential quality. It's often a good idea to look at a director's track record because a terrible director can turn even the best of movie ideas into complete crap.

Michael Bay is probably example #1. His movies have a similar style and intellectual quality (or lack thereof). You know what to expect from Bay (good or bad) after you've seen a couple of his films.

I actually agree with everything you're saying, however, I was speaking on behalf of the average movie-goer. Most people judge movies on previews. They don't care who the director is and don't do research to see his track record.

I agree that the director is probably the best way to judge a movie's potential, but most people just don't think that way.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned those fucking racist stereotypes in Transformers 2. I'm not a p.c. guy, and even I found those "jive-talking" twins to be offensive. That alone is enough to put me off Bay, even if he knew what a good script is...which he doesn't.

I wasn't offended, just annoyed and confused.

I hate Bay haters. Something very snobby about the way they post/talk about him. Bay could have Megatron, and Optimus Prime jump out of the screen, and do a huge battle in the theater, and a fan will say, 'meh'. If Bay did a GI Joe movie, I bet all you naysayers would go in droves!

I love when someone pulls out the "snobbery" card when someone else dares to say how bad a Michael Bay movie is. Sometimes movies are just plain bad and people need to stop acting like drooling twelve year olds and grow up. Yes, when I was younger I probably would have enjoyed his movies but as I got older and experienced more of life I realized his movies were no longer or ever entertaining.

It's not about snobbery, it's about someone who makes terrible movies and we the "snobs" have to point out. Michael Bay is the epicenter for idiocracy and the people following him aren't helping.

You know what the funny thing is? Bay is actually a really good shooter. He wasn't always all shakey cams and millisecond edits. When he's calmed down, he shoots great action. Transformers 3 shows that...there's some really well shot and put together action beats in that movie.

It's his insistence on juvenile humour, racism, an extremely overt misogyny bordering on a hatred of women and a lack of concern for telling a decent story that I think people hate. Well, that's what I hate. It's not about Optimus and Megatron fighting each other in ways that aren't good enough. It's his barely disguised hatred for everything a powerful white male can dominate that I get uncomfortable with.

That whole post is the emphasis of my original post!

It's not my fault anything Michael Bay makes is just about worthless on any level.

/\ You still went and saw all three movies didn't you? Why do people keep going back if they KNOW they're not gonna like it.

Because I'm a trusting idiot. Seriously.

After every one they kept saying "we know what we did wrong, we're sorry, this one is better." For some reason, I believed them...especially after trailers that seemed to look like they really did put together better movies.

Part 3 was definitely shot and cut better, thanks to the 3D, but man...who approves these scripts? I honestly can't imagine why any executive would approve that 45 minutes of Shia looking for a job. Cut to the (robot) chase, you got a 90 minute movie, more showings and therefore more money. I just can't figure it out. I get the action...but what is it with Michael Bay and these terrible and useless character beats. Does he actually think they're good?

But to be honest...I am disappointed in myself for ever seeing another Michael Bay movie after Bad Boys II. That was the most offensive movie I've ever seen, especially the opening scene. Thing is...the 8 years old with 20 years of anticipation for a live action Transformers movie drags me to these things every time. I hate that kid.

I wouldn't.

Actually, the Michael Bay films I've seen are Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and Transformers. All in theatres, and only the last as an adult. I don't plan on seeing a fourth one anytime soon, let alone from a toy franchise I have no nostalgia for.
