Why are members/fans? so rude to each other?

Are there any threads I should read in order to fully enjoy this thread, or is everything I need to know already here? Should the other threads be read in any particular order?

How do the different threads tie into Articles of the Federation?
In order to enjoy Articles of the Federation, you'll need to read every forum post on every form first.

Regarding the Golden Rule.

I vehemently disagree with this rule as applied. It has a great ideal, and purpose, but in actuality it is pretty woefully flawed. Especially in a very diverse crowd. There is a little known alternative called the Platinum Rule, which I firmly believe should be the way things are done. That rule is one that basically says treat others they way they want to be treated. In a diverse setting, you are going to have any number of personalities present, and one personality type (the type who welcomes and likes heated debate) and another type (the type who just wants to state their opinion and not be called on it) aren't going to mesh well with the Golden Rule. The arguer will begin arguing because that's what they'd want others to do to them. The other will be all up in arms about being "attacked."

This being a Trek board and all, let's use Trek as an example. Vulcans (in general) approach everything with unrelenting levels of logic and no emotion. Humans (mostly) embrace and enjoy their emotions whether or not they are logical. A Vulcan would rub a Human in very much the wrong way and vice versa. Same goes for the Klingons, or the Tellerites, or any number of other vastly different people.

Now, sure there is really no way to know ahead of time how a person wants to be treated, which is what makes the Platinum Rule more difficult to adhere to. In the case you don't know I think the Golden Rule is a good fall back, noting that the response you get may not be what you expected. All we can do is explain ourselves in these cases and communicate our intent, which I'd say 90% of the time the intent is to be friendly and offer the necessary information. In a nutshell, I'm saying in this last part what Therin already said. Sometimes it's the other person who misinterpreted the response to their post as something that it wasn't.

What happened to: If you have nothing nice to say to someone either keep it to yourself?

It goes hand in hand with "treat others as you wish to be treated."

I'm generally a laid back sort, who doesn't like to get too wrapped up in all of this and take it too seriously. What you see here is probably what you'd get if we met at a con, and there are folks running around here who can testify to that. It's Star Trek after all; it's supposed to be fun,and we're supposed to be able to have fun yammering about it.

I like it here because -- generally -- the atmosphere is conducive to informal fat chewing and breeze shooting. This BBS is loaded with people who take this stuff, themselves, and everything else far too seriously than should be considered healthy, which is but one of the reasons I don't bother with the majority of fora. Life's too short, and I've got better things to do. However, this particular forum is a much cooler place to visit than comparable boards at other sites, due in no small part to the fact that most folks here get along and police themselves, and the mods generally only yank the reins when they really have to.

Like Terri, I prefer the Golden Rule, but guess what? The Golden Rule stops being applicable once someone demonstrates that they're only here to stir shit up. I feel no obligation to roll over and take it in the ass when somebody's got an agenda or an axe to grind. If people want to air their discontent about the the work, I'm down with that. If people want to tear into other people, then I'm liable to say something. If people want to play games and screw around, tap-dancing around the rules in order to provoke a reaction, then they run the risk of getting called on it.

Bottom line: This place should be fun. Engaging, thought-provoking, and perhaps even informative from time to time? Yes. But, most of all, it should be a nice, fun place to visit.

So, with all that on the table, I'd just like to say for the record that I wasn't staring at Terri's ass this morning...you know...when I walked into that light pole. Twice.

Some on here have met me in person and know that I'm not at all like I am on here..

But people are also to quick to judge which IMO, isn't right because how can you judge someone before you even know that person?

^ And I still didn't see it, even with binoculars.
First, take the caps off the ends of the binoculars. Second, turn them around and look through them from the other side. Third, stop pointing them at Dilmore's crotch.

*shakes head*

Dayton, Dayton, Dayton, there's "taking the throne" and there's "taking the throne", dude.....

Nicely played, Dave. Nicely played. :techman:

There's a reason Dave's at the front of the line.

I love coming to this board, there is a good mix of intelligent posters and it's very decent of the writers and editors to take the time to answer posters and give us the inside track on their work.

However, there is (and thankfully it's a minority of people) one line of questioning I find rather rude - that is when the person posing the question starts from the assumption that the writers and editors are starting from the position of personal dislike for either an element of the fanbase or a certain character. "Man, it's an insult they killed off Captain Asshate, if you didn't like the character then....". I just find that line of questioning bizarre and insulting.
