Why are members/fans? so rude to each other?

Maybe it is if people's perception of what you like about Star Trek is skewed? It might be that you say things about the series that don't tally with what they think Trek is about, so therefore they wonder what you're seeing in it that they don't (and vice versa)?
Wow. Well, just read all of those posts. To the OP-typically(especially in this thread) if any "slams" are posted it is because the original person posted in a thoughtless manner. Saying "Hey, Dayton Ward-you suck!" is what usually brings heated reponses(ok, maybe DW was a poor choice of examples but its the thought that's important
) Point being-this and the fan fic forum is/are two of the politest, most reasonable areas on the Internet. Questions are answered reasonably, authors are willing to hear honest reactions to their work without flipping out, posters in general have open discussions that often center around opposing viewpoints without resorting to "Your Mama looks like a Klingon!"-type comments and, when an idiot like me comes in asking bizarre or stupid questions, there is usually a patient response. What more did you want?

I have to agree with the OP to some extent. I've watched recently as several threads were locked because of individuals becoming so caught up in their disgreements, that the threads seemed to become verbal slugfests.
I like coming to thread, learn a lot about upcoming books and often enjoy the various reviews, etc. Someone quoted Q about the bloody nose, on the other hand Thumper quoting his Mother stated "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Sometimes, when thread seem to go out control, I wish various poster would ignore the thread.
I don't know if the ignore function still works, don't really care, because I've developed my own ignores system, I just skip their post. At times, some people indicate "Don't feed the Trolls".

There are a lot of questions asked that really could be answered in seconds by going to Google. For example, someone posted once to ask if a certain word was a real word in English. Typing the word in a Google search window would have taken less time than coming here and typing the question.

I know the question is more about the Trek Lit forum in particular, but the rudeness is across the TrekBBS (and the Internet, actually).
I don't browse any particular forum here directly, I just look for items of interest under New Posts, and sometimes don't even notice which forum they're from, so this observation isn't about Trek Lit, so please no one take offense, because it's not about you. Probably.
For many of the rude folks, it seems to stem from an artificial sense of superiority, be it from higher post count, or time on the BBS or on the Internet in general. Traits which in the Grand Scheme hardly make one superior, just old.
It leads to this idea that because they knew something a newbie is asking about a long time ago, it is a waste of their precious superior time to give a civil response. Damn the newbie for being new. I hate that attitude. We were all new once. Maybe they themselves got abused for being new and are just passing on the abuse in a circle of viciousness, I don't know.

You are probably correct.
Though the inability to understand how Star Trek appeals to others with different worldviews should not be considered permission to insult or treat badly.
I understand why people like the culturally diverse, humanistic elements of Star Trek.
I don't sarcastically tell them to go watch another series just because that isn't my thing.
I think what's getting lost is people wanting to understand that if the culturally diverse, humanistic elements of Trek aren't your thing, and those permeate the universe so deeply, then what is the thing that brings you to Trek? Obviously, your worldview is completely divergent from the others. Speaking out of frustration is one thing, speaking out of a desire to understand another's worldview is actually very Trek, IMO.
I guess the problem there is, we often assume the poster has all the books lined up in publication order on their shelf, and the answer seems bleeding obvious.
But... if they don't already own those books, and intend to buy them and read them one at a time, more research is required, and they don't have the books in hand to study the publication details. (Although, these days, Memory Beta will always have the months and years of publication. If the poster knows to go there.
Also, it seems to me that a great many book readers never read the publication details on the reverse of a book's title page (or don't know what it all means - as a school librarian, I'm pointing this page out to people almost every day), nor do they read "Historian's notes", introductions, afterwords or "About the Author".
Just like most people at the cinema walk out before the end credits even start.

I don't assume the guy has all the books on a shelf. But he seems to know how many there are and what they are called which tells me he has some access to most of the information. It shouldn't take too much effort to find the rest. If you're talking about something like NF or DS9R I don't have an issue with that even though it's in the FAQ. Most FAQ's on the internet are crap and don't really answer FAQ's or maybe they don't think there question is that frequent or what ever. But if we're talking about 3 or 4 books...
Just a difference in philosophy I guess. For most questions I have I type it into a google search window and my answer usually pops up. I like instant gratification.
Are there any threads I should read in order to fully enjoy this thread, or is everything I need to know already here? Should the other threads be read in any particular order?
