Why are Dr. Who books so bad?!

Interestingly most of the novels lack the Daleks (Although they are often mentioned), this is probably due to problems with the Nation estate (Although the Daleks do show up a ton in the audios).
There were however two Dalek novels, War and Legacy of the Daleks, featuring the Eighth Doctor. They're pretty bad though.

The Cybermen show up a bit more frequently, although there's never been a Pertwee/Cyberman novel (Although I think there was one of the companion Audios which rectified this).

The Master shows up in various incarnations in the novels, most of which are written by David Mcintee (Or Lonemagpie as he's known here).

I've been trying to read some of the new adventures and I find them to mostly mastabatory and convoluted for the sake of being convoluted.

I think that it would further discussion to actually say what eight books that you read.
Most would not get a passing grade in a college creative writing class.
Most science fiction stories wouldn't. And most college creative writing course takers would not get published.

Agreed... though I'm thinking back to high school - I got one story as sci fi marked as a fail. The same story was submitted to some writing competition and it got me top prize, £500 and a rather patronising book.

I have never been a fan of education :p

Basically the Nation estate wanted 60% of the author's fee, and none of us were really willing to do that

Actually three times, but I *think* I'm the only repeat offender where he's concerned.

I could have sworn that Mike Tucker was a repeater, with Dust Breeding and a novel, but I'll be danged if I can figure out what novel it was.

I've only read a handful of the Who books based on the current series, but i cant really agree with the universal blanketing of all Who books being bad. Granted ive focused on those written by Dan Abnett and James Swallow, since i am a fan of their other work, so im probably biased towards liking them on principle.
And some of the Torchwood books are better than the TV series, although some would argue thats not hard.

I keep meaning to pick up a few of the older books and give them a try, so thanks for the link Lonemagpie
