Why all the secrecy during production? (spoilers)

The production of Star Trek was kept more secret than the happenings at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.

Normally when a film production is kept secret its because there is some well written detailed intricate original plot full of twist and turns that must be kept secret so as not to spoil the experience.

So they keep Star Trek a secret from the public. Then the movie comes out and its complete shlock!

There's nothing there! There's barely a plot at all. This movie is Starship Troopers! This movie is The Fifth Element! I've come across people who didn't want to hear spoilers, and I have to tell them there's nothing to spoil! You don't have to worry about spoilers for this movie anymore than you would have to worry about spoilers for Wing Commander.

So the question is, why was this production kept so secret?

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

No spoilers?
Amanda's death and Vulcan's permanent destruction were huge surprises to me that I'm glad I wasn't spoiled on. I'm also glad I didn't know how the scene with the Kelvin was going to play out. I knew it would get destroyed, but I didn't know it was going to happen with James T. Kirk being born. I also didn't know how Nimoy's Spock was going to show up and what role he was going to play.
I'm really glad not too much information got out beforehand, and it would have been harder to keep people from blabbing about it.

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

Abrams and his cohorts didn't want us to realize too soon just how bad the movie sucked.

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

i think it was to keep all that was happening a secret, things like the appearance of Spock Prime and other bits that did happen in the film

The vast vast majority thought it was a great film. The movie is a success, deal with it.

Yeah...sorry, this ain't happenin' for you here. :)

They wanted people to be as surprised by the plot and story incident as possible, and lots of people were. Mission accomplished.

But then, these guys have known what they were doing from the beginning, and they've done it to resounding success as well as acceptance by most Trek fans. :techman:

What plot and story incident was so crucial it had to be hidden from the public?

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

As mentioned above,
Vulcan's GONE, man.

How could that not be a surprise? That one came out of nowhere. If you predicted that, you should hit Vegas.

Vulcan's destruction, among other things.

Humorously enough, Drew McWeeny actually reported on that as if "speculating" way back in 2007 - and just about no one paid attention.

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

Vulcan's destruction, among other things.

I guess you could raise that point, but Vulcan's destruction wasn't really crucial to the overall plot. It was just a device to show the capabilities of Nero's weapon; sort of like how Alderan was destroyed by the Death Star in Star Wars.

The fate of Vulcan and the Vulcan's did not get much screen time. Someone who knows nothing about Trek (which is who this film was made for) would not care about Vulcan anymore than they would care about the fate of Alderan in Star Wars.

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

I liked not knowing much more than Nero was a Romulan and Spock Prime goes back in time, although at the thought of time travel gave me an ughh moment or two. But sometimes the secrecy gets out-of-hand sometimes (ala Lucas).

Yes, but when they begin to look for more of the series they will see just how important it was.

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

Why do you need to know all the details about an upcoming movie?

You're acting like a kid who has to find and open all his presents way before christmas.

I guess you should be glad that you live in the internet age... Imagine before that - Going to movies when most plot points weren't know beforehand.
Oh the HORROR!!!!! :rommie:

Re: Why all the secrecy during production?

I'm not talking about "all the details". I'm talking about a plot synopsis or summary. They weren't even providing that. I need a plot synopsis to determine if I want to see the movie. You telling me you go into every movie blind?

and furthurmore, like I said, Star Trek did not have any important details that needed to be kept secret. There were no Spock dying, I am your father, Who shot J.R? level plot twist here.

I think it's just S.O.P. at all points. Rachel Nichols ("Gaila") said they had all the green girls covered from head to toes and then riding in covered golf carts when they had to leave the set.

^Bingo!! They did it because of all the fanboys who would go to any lengths to expose the plot.
I think it was marketing genius to keep so much secrecy. I liked being surprised.
