Who's your pick for the new captain?

After a lot of reflection, I think my pic would be Idris Elba.

He's an established actor, fairly well known, and the right age to be the captain of a starship. He's got the proper gravitas for the role, he could easily handle the physical aspects of it, and although it's the least important requirement on my list, he also happens to check the 'minority' block for those who consider that the most important thing.

I definitely would love to have Lee Pace involved, but I'd prefer to have a woman of color as the captain. Pace would be great as a first officer or doctor (and should be gay).
My only problem with Lee Pace is that I can never see him as anything other than "oh, that's Lee Pace" in any of his roles.

Gina Torres would pretty much be my ideal captain.
Lee Pace can play an Andorian. He could face social stigma since he's only attracted to other men, a taboo in a society that mates with four genders. Maybe Pace would disappear into the role better with blue body paint.

Speaking of Suits, if they really want to go with a white dude, Macht would make a good choice, in a poor man's Hamm sort of way.

I would love Gina Torres in the role. That would be my first pick.

Also, Michelle Rodriguez is a goddess. She might make a good captain in that rebellious, prime directive violating sort of way. And, she has done sci-fi in the past like Gina, so there's a bit of precedent.

I think it would be disappointing if we got another white male captain. We've had three of those already, or four if we count new Kirk as a separate character. If he were gay that would be the only way it would be an interesting choice.
Not that I haven't enjoyed the white male characters we've had, but there's no excuse not to have better diversity than that.

I could get behind Captain Gina Torres and Commander Michelle Rodriguez
Though I doubt it would happen, I would like to see a Trek series with a female Captain and First Officer (as well as several other women on the cast). I'm doubtful because Voyager may have given us a female CO, but none of the other bridge staff were women, the others relegated to roles away from the centre of the action.

Another vote for Gina Torres.

Although, I'd love to see John Cho as Captain Sulu. No desire to see Takei as Captain Sulu because Takei isn't lead material. Cho, however, is.

If only the original helmsman didn't die. I rather liked the idea of another Betazoid on the bridge. Oh well...

I wonder if ol' Wesley will appear in the new series..? When I watched Voyager I always suspected that they could pretty easily make an episode with him (maybe he could even get them home). I guess the Wesley hate may be just too strong.

I just don't want it to seem like pandering.

I like those two actresses and I'd like to see them in leading roles together, but when it becomes a "yay, female power, more females" yadda yadda, it gets a little tiring. The new Ghostbusters film completely failed in being more diverse, and that was the one thing it was trying to achieve.

I don't care about female, male, gay, black or white captain.

Give me an ALIEN captain.
My only worry is that we kind of need a human captain for us to relate to. They set the tone of the show and represent not only the show as a whole, but the viewer too. I want lots of alien characters, but I'd rather keep with a human captain.

Linda Fiorentino, or Parker Posey. Maybe Kate Upton.
Charlie Sheen, or maybe Mickey Rourke to make it really different.

Maybe just an empty chair.
