The timeline doesn't add up (Into Darkness and SNW are the same year, if different universes), but Anson Mount seemed to me to do doing an "in his prime" version of Bruce Greenwood's older Pike.

To be fair to the original Pike we never got to see him as a series lead. If he had been head of TOS and not Shatner as KIrk we might have a whole other appreciation for him. Granted if that happened the entire legacy of Trek would be shook up in away as to be completely different from what we got instead. Actually many of us wouldn't have even been born due to this timeline changing drastically. I am guessing the 1975 for my mom and dad would be different enough as to me not being born.

Poor fella died too young in 1969, so we’d have no TAS/Movies.

On the other hand, George Takei wouldn’t have been able to build a media empire entirely out of whining about Shatner.

So there’s that.

Hunter, then Mount. Honestly, Greenwood always felt more like Robert April.

Greenwood's Pike feels like a totally different character to me. A good character and a good performance, but Pike in name only.

It has to be Mount, but I loved Greenwood's version as well. Hunter was great, and if I'd seen more of him, he might rank higher. But based on everything, Mount is my favorite.

Mount-Pike is more interesting to me than Archer ever will be.

SNW is streaming-only right now, I hope it will find its way onto German TV. It's going to be not before 2024, the year when...

Rios got stuck in the past.

Bruce Greenwood. He was a pretty decent guy, but with a little edge about him. Jeffrey Hunter seemed a bit too emotional for my tastes. And Anson Mount's Pke simply bored me.

I think Hunter played "worn out" quite nicely. I understand and perhaps agree that he did not have the "latitude" of Shatner, as Nimoy opined, but I thought he was fine in "The Cage".

I really don't get why Mount is so popular. I find him utterly uncompelling. That's pretty much death for me for a show anchored on him.

Hunter didn't have time to get into the part. Either way, Mount owns the character.
It's kind of like Superman. There have been a lot of people who've played Superman before Christopher Reeves and afterwards, but unless you've somehow just never seen his movies, or are about to lie and say "I only read the comics, man." Your superman is probably Christopher Reeves. He owned the role for more than one generation and it will be like trying to get overcooked rice out of a sauce pan that's been sitting around for five thousand years to ever get someone else into the roll.

It would be like thinking Erenreich or whatever is name is, is the definitive Han Solo. You're probably just saying it to stick out of the crowd. Maybe some roles are easier to take over than others. I think Pine did such a good job with Kirk there was no cognitive dissonance seeing him as such. Greenwood did well but his Pike is written so differently he' mostly a different person. He could be Mount's Pike's uncle Admiral Pike, maybe.
