By season 7, he's a veteran officer with command experience under his belt, he's comfortable with who he is, and he's the one who makes that great speech in "Endgame"

He's like that through most of the series, quietly competent. He's only immature or gullible or clueless when circumstances require it.

Sure, it's a subtle change, and it was pretty much in place by midway through the series. But it is a change. With VGR, we have to take what we can get.

If you're judging it on who has the most screentime, makes the choices, drives the drama, gives us someone to latch onto, and has the big speech at the end, it's Janeway.

But if you're judging it on the lead character introduced at the start that we follow throughout the story it's totally Chakotay! Sure he disappears for most of the episode, and when he is there he's mostly standing behind Janeway failing to express any opinions of his own, and... okay fine it's not Chakotay.

I've added "Other (Explain)" to the poll - for those who'd argue in favor of the Caretaker, Chakotay, and Commander Cavitt as the protagonist! I also added "None (Explain)".

Cavit could've definitely become the protagonist, of the pilot and perhaps even the entire series, if only he knew what "Brace for impact" meant. It's a tragedy that Voyager never showed us that alternate timeline.

I'd still like to know how sitting down in his seat would have counted as "bracing for impact". :p

The displacement wave hit them from behind so sitting down on his chair probably would've helped. The bridge officers with something immediately behind them survived, Stadi at the helm console didn't.

But if Cavit had survived, he'd have reminded Janeway that if they left the Ocampa world after destroying the array, the Ocampa would still be defenseless. Voyager would have stayed in orbit, helping the Ocampa learn to take care of themselves. Within a few months, they'd have figured out how to harness their incredible mental abilities and used them to create a space portal that would have dropped Voyager right in earth's orbit. Seven years of assorted Delta Quadrant misadventures wouldn't have happened. Janeway would have gotten home, married Mark, and greeted Millie's puppies. Tom and the Maquis would have been delivered to the New Zealand penal colony. Seska would have revealed herself to be a Cardassian agent and been sent home, by the terms of the treaty. The Doctor would have reverted to being an occasional emergency supplement. Harry would have had a successful career. And eventually the Borg-8472 war would have decimated the galaxy.
