I don't like it. I don't think Smith's Doctor should ever wear long coats. They're too strongly associated with Tennant's tenure at this point.

Smith is well established as the Doctor at this point that I can look at him in a long coat and not think of Tennant.

Besides, it is a long coat but if fits in with Smith's unique style. And since he's not standing still with his hands in his pockets giving a thousand-mile glare, I don't see any similarity to Tennant at all.

Oh indeed, no Doctor would ever be associated with a long coat other than Tennant.:guffaw:

Uh, I didn't say that, I said that at this point, they're strongly associated with Tennant and should be avoided for future Doctors.

Avoiding them for future Doctors...until when? Just because the long coat is associate with Tennant doesn't mean they should give up the long coat forever.

Personally, I think this long coat is fantastic. I'm a fan of the Doctor switching up his clothes between stories; who wants to wear the same stuff every day? (Another reason I loved Tennant's blue suit.)

What would the fourth Doctor have to say to that? This coat is quite unlike the style Tennant wore in both color and cut. I don't see the resemblance at all. Frock coats are cool. The Doctor it reminds me of at all is Troughton, whom Smith has said is one of his favorite Doctors. I wouldn't be surprised if this choice was one Smith made for that feel for himself.

I don't know. A decision like that doesn't have to be made immediately. If I were the costume designer or showrunner, I'd say no long coats for the foreseeable future, likely not during Smith's tenure. I'd leave the door open to reversing that decision at a later date if I felt there'd been enough time since Tennant and his iconic look.

As a fan of long coats in general and of the new Matt Smith one in particular, I guess I'm glad you're not the costume designer or showrunner, then. :p

You guys have noticed that, prior to JNT taking over, The Doctor wore different clothes all the time, right? Sure, he had a style, but he used to actually change his clothing on a regular basis.

Having the Doctor always only wearing one set of clothing as though it were his superhero costume has a kind of cartoonish effect on the tone of the show. Having two identical outfits where the color scheme of certain items is inverted or different, but otherwise identical, only increases this cartoonish quality.

Should Smith's Doctor always be in bowties and Tennant's in pinstripes? Certainly. But when you reach the point where Tennant is always in the exact same tie...

Tennant went through several ties. I could never find the page again, but I remember some fan costume sight that actually catalogued his shirt and tie combos for every episode in the second season. I was surprised by how much variation there was.

There was initially. At a certain point (forget which exact episode) he began wearing the same "Time Lord/Time Swirl" tie, as well as the same shirt.

I liked his look better prior to this emphasis on costume-y look other eccentric clothed.

Fair enough. It's a subjective decision, after all. But putting Smith in a long coat is one I disagree with.

I only find it weird in that you generally wear that sort of coat indoors, which is where the Doctor finds himself most often. The tweed is the kind of coat that one wears to lecture at college and then back home. The new coat is a more outdoorsey kind of thing. Still geeky though, which is what they're after - I'm sure we all know the guy who would wear a long black trenchcoat every day and every where. over a T-shirt. And jeans. And his ponytail.
