I regret not having voted for Janeway. I´d like to go to Fair Haven with her, hanging out in the Ox and Lamb (my autocorrect system doesn´t even allow a misspelled "hang").

Nothing wrong with the holodec resort simulation as such but the episode "Fair Haven" gives me the creep. Even worse than that episode with Flotter.

The worst thing is that I had almost forgotten Flotter (probably due to the fact that I used the fast-forward button on my old VHS a lot during Naomi's visits on the holodeck there) but I still remember "Fair Haven".

Maybe because I saw it when it was aired and not on VHS. But it still gives me the creep.

That's a good point but I would question how open minded he'd be. Like, he knows his views on everything and will dismiss any line of conversation he considers illogical.

Seven might be an interesting person to have a conversation with, as she has a different perspective than anybody else. Janeway or the Doc would also make an interesting conversation.

I agree Fair Haven was a bit creepy. Like, we often see 24th century people exoticizing and idealizing the past in the same way modern people do it to the third world, and Fair Haven is the most blatant example. Flotter was stupid but at least it was a believable childrens' education program.

Then Sisko might be right when he first declines to participate in saving Vic in Badda Bing, because Blacks hadn´t equal rights in the 60ies, but that isn´t a problem in Vic´s program and therefore unrealistic. Sisko changed his mind when he realized that Vic is a good friend for his fellows. But it is essentially the same: the past, idealized.

As to the Irish setting. Maybe I don´t know anything about Irish history. But it is still a holodeck program. One might argue, that it is simply too convenient to drop all the unpleasant aspects of the past.

Personally, I'd rather like to catch a play or opera with either Seven and the Doctor or with Garak and Bashir; I'm sure the discussion in the intermission would be most stimulating!

Or, actually, scratch Garak and Bashir; I can't help but think they'd bicker during the performance.

Picard would certainly make for interesting theatre-going company as well, though I'd feel more pressure to be read up ahead of time. I'd probably prepare a list of interesting things to say so that I'd appear more learned.

That's also a good point about dropping racism and things like that, but that's not what I was thinking of.

I'm having trouble finding the right words to express it, but this analogy comes to mind: The crew designed the Fair Haven townspeople the way male writers design female characters in romantic comedies. Their entire personality reflects and justifies their idealized role as a more evolved culture.

It's like what you would see on television if The Amazing Race stopped in an Irish village.

Janeway, Kes, and B'Elanna are my type of ladies. Many of my female friends behave similarly to them. Janeway and B'Elanna have that rough edge to them and Kes is very compassionate and understanding. As for the men, I'd go with Tuvok, Chakotay, and Neelix. Tuvok because he'd help keep my irrationality in line, Chakotay because he's got that "chaotic good" thing going on, and Neelix because he's neurotic, much like myself.

The Captain would get involved to help her and so would I. Kes would probably stay out of the brawl. In the end we would all end up in some alien planet's jail until a disapproving Tuvok and an amused Chakotay bailed us out in the morning. Ahhh, that would be a memorable night.

Aha yes, I love that scenario. But then of course Seska would once again show up out of nowhere after everyone thought she was dead - for the sole purpose of taunting Chakotay. Then one of us would have to put her in a chokehold or maybe Kes could use her mental abilities to make her face bleed.
