Who would you cast as Kirk?

Kate McKinnon.

I would just cast Kirk with a new unknown actor who has some talent. Feel his physical looks are less important than the actor having the skill to properly be Kirk.

It's probably going to be a bit part/cameo so anyone with a strong physical likeness who can remember the line 'Scanning complete Captain'.

To recast a young Prime Kirk, you really have to keep Shatner in mind.

Someone that could pull off the swagger, confidence and badass aspects of Kirk, and convincing as a ladies man.

I'd go with Taron Egerton from the Kingsman films as young James Kirk.

His acting was bad, even by CW standards, but what's up with him nowadays? He came off so weird at SDCC.

Thats not a bad pick actually.

Reading this thread Just struck home how few actors under 30 with charisma there are.

I disagree. The producers have an opportunity to show, for the first time, exactly how Kirk became captain so quickly at the age of 32. That's a season-long story arc.

yeah absolutely... in season 7 or so, he takes command in 2265

Well, the show is currently in late 2257/early 2258, so Kirk is like 24-ish and has a good eight years before becoming Captain.

Also I'd much prefer less TOS characters/ships/etc to show up.

If only implied by the fact he presumably leapfrogged a bunch of other officers (including Spock) to be given what must have been a highly coveted posting.

And not just one posting. Kirk's biography in The Making of Star Trek said that he got his first command, of a destroyer-equivalent vessel, while still quite young. Naturally he would've needed to get a few years of experience with one or more smaller ships before earning a posting to the Enterprise. Although the only canonical mention of Kirk's first command was when Elizabeth Dehner said that Kirk asked for Gary Mitchell to be assigned to it.

No, please no, let Kirk rest.
The Trek universe isn't too small to tell stories about the same people over and over again...
Lets go further the stablished characters and lets explore new stories about new civilizations and new life ...where no one has gone before.

Doing that would destroy the foundation of STD. The entire point of STD IS about showing how small and contrived the Star Trek universe is because everyone knows Michael Burnham
