Who would you cast as Kirk?

Red Panda

Commander
Red Shirt
I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet we'll see Kirk before the end of Discovery's run.

This thread just assumes they recast the role, instead of using CGI trickery. The show has an outrageous budget but it's not going to do dodgy CGI that not even Star Wars can get right.

So who would you dream cast as Kirk?

The actor would need to be a white male, mid 20s to early 30s, because of where the show is in its timeline.

My pick is Colton Haynes from Arrow:

For reference: Kirk has already left the Farragut (11 years prior to "Obsession" which is set in 2268). Canonically, we don't know where he was between the Farragut and the Enterprise...

... which is not the same as my saying "Let's have Kirk on Discovery!" But there we are.

Freddie Highmore....now or 5 years from now. Helluva good actor and I think he could do great things in that role.

Great actor but he only works 6 months in a year (which is why The Good Doctor is a production scheduler's worst nightmare) and that show will keep him busy another 4 to 6 years.

You’re probably right about Kirk showing up. I don’t know how though. Maybe they meet up with the Farragut for a joint mission. Would have been better if Georgiou was still around since she met him when he was a kid.

I can't say I knew him, personally, but an educational coincidence at the very least... I remember seeing the promos for Divergent and thinking "hang on, I know that guy!"

That's ironic, because I would've picked Stephen Amell.

Strictly speaking, all we know is that the cloud creature's attack on the Farragut in 2257 killed Captain Garrovick and "decimated the crew." The episode doesn't explicitly say that the ship was destroyed or that Kirk left the crew immediately thereafter. A couple of the tie-in depictions of the Farragut disaster (the Debt of Honor comic and The Ashes of Eden, I think) do show the ship being destroyed in the attack, but the episode just says it suffered heavy crew losses, and I think David Goodman's The Autobiography of James T. Kirk has Kirk remaining aboard the Farragut for a year or two more after the attack. (Although that book was written before Discovery and thus doesn't acknowledge what we now know, that the cloud creature attack would've probably taken place during the Klingon War, which spanned May 2256 to c. October 2257.)

To recast a young Prime Kirk, you really have to keep Shatner in mind.

Someone that could pull off the swagger, confidence and badass aspects of Kirk, and convincing as a ladies man.

I'd go with Taron Egerton from the Kingsman films as young James Kirk.

His acting was bad, even by CW standards, but what's up with him nowadays? He came off so weird at SDCC.

Perhaps. Perhaps not.

There's enough wiggle room with the dates that DSC could do an episode about the Farragut disaster if the mood strikes them.

(IMHO that would be the best way to include Kirk.)

Yup, you're right. Christopher pointed out too how he still could've been aboard.

Kate McKinnon.

If we're going down that road, let's go all out and make it Leslie Jones.

That way we can perfectly explicitly say "You know, we wanted to make a good show, but you bitched and whined so much, if we're going to get accused of doing things just to troll you we might as well actually do it." :)
