Who were your favourite companions

While Victoria was cute, she was basically scream bait. Zoe at least had smarts to of set the traditional screamer role of the young girl companion.

Though as the episode where they enter the Land of Fiction proves, Zoe has a nice bum.

Being that the Dalak's Master Plan is still at least partly missing, and those two were not companions for very long, they kind of get missed a lot. Both dying on the Doctor's watch almost two decades before Adric in show.

The First Doctor went though a lot of companions. Had the Timelords not stopped him, the Second Doctor probably would have kept Jamie and Zoe around until they were old and grey. And they probably would have wanted to stay.
The novelization of the Dalek Masterplan has been around for a few years (in two volumes).

^ What I recall from The Krotons:
"The Doctor is almost as clever as I am!"

I think she was trying to assure someone that Two wasn't just the buffoon he appeared to be. If memory serves, he was doing a lot of clowning around in that story.
Yeah, they'd just taken an intelligence test of some sort and the Doctor didn't do well enough on his to impress the aliens. Zoe was trying to save him from something dire (I don't recall what, exactly; it's been a long time since I saw that story).

There been so many companions,it hard to pick your favourite ones, cause I got favourites from each of the doctors,so I guess I will choose from the ones I like from each doctor.

1st Doctor--Ian Chesterton,susan foreman
2nd doctor-Jamie and Zoe
3rd doctor--Jo Grant,Sarah jane,the brig
4th doctor-SJ Smith,Leela,Romana 2
5th doctor-Nyssa,Peri
6th doctor-Peri
7th doctor-Dorothy gale mcshane-aka ace
8th doctor Grace Halloway
9th doctor-rose,jack
10th doctor-Martha,rose
11th doctor-Amelia pond,clara Oswald
12th doctor-clara

Hmm so many to choose from. I didn't like SJS when I first saw her on nuWho and classic. Then I watched the SJS Adventures and fell in love. Upon rewatching classic Who, I liked her a lot more.

River Song is my favorite but I'm not sure she really counts as a companion. I really enjoyed Donna and Martha. The latter doesn't get as much fanfare as she deserves. She did a lot for the Doctor but the unrequited love angle during season 3 kind of made things awkward. I do enjoy me some Rose even though she really pissed me off at first.

I liked Ace but really wish she would just call the Doctor "the Doctor." When it comes to classic Who though, Romana I and II are the bestttttttt. K9 comes in behind them. :P

Definitely Sarah. Perfect companion.
Jamie was spot on for Troughton's Doc.
Peri - particularly on audio with Davison.
Evelyn - fabulous foil for Sixie and Maggie Stables was obviously having a ball on the audios.
Donna - didn't expect to like her but she was brilliant.

Having listened to the majority of the first season of the Eighth Doctor Adventures in a week, Lucie Miller is definitely on my list now.

My top five:

Sarah Jane.
Frobisher.
Donna.
Dr. Evelyn Smythe.
Jamie.
Rory.

Yes, I know there's six. I can't decide between Jamie and Rory for the fifth spot.

For me

Harry
Liz Shaw
Jo Grant
Sarah Jane
1st Romana
Donna Noble
Mickey

Good list; Shaw, Grant and Harry fit their roles well (always a fan of the UNIT presence on the show), served the era and Doctor without pandering to the worst of audience fantasies....which brings me to...

I can't stand Rose Tyler or Amy Pond
Rose was the basement of Mary Sue nonsense in DW history, with schlockster RTD (and cronies) pushing it over and over again. One has to wonder how a character who strings a boyfriend along, dumps him in favor of "someone/thing better," expected him to still care about her, and can check swooning as her (ultimately) biggest contribution to that universe--could make any "favorite" or "best" list.

I would add Martha as a favorite; since everyone under the sun realized she was never going to be sloppy seconds after ever so precious Rose Tyler (and she said as much in her final regular episode), it allowed her to be a functional character taking advantage of her considerable education/intellect.

What sentimentality existed between Martha & the Doctor was the natural growth of fondness / respect, not that constant high school soap opera crap which was the defining plot line of the Tyler period (and beyond in some post-Tyler episodes).

Finally, I will never get the absolute dislike of Adric in some DW fan circles. I thought he added an interesting new wrinkle to the companion structure, was not floating behind the Doctor in awe, and had one of the best of all companion send-offs, thanks to his general appeal, and acceptance of his fate.

I'll be hated for this but I liked Adric too. I feel some fans never gave him a chance.

As for Rose Tyler thank you, thank you, thank you. That's how I feel about her a lot too, and the worst scene ever was the schlocky crying at the end of Doomsday. How did The Doctor fall in love with Rose Tyler when he gave Sarah Jane the cold shoulder in School Reunion basically saying he can't love anyone there, but is tits over arse in love with Rose Tyler.

That's pretty much how I'm feeling about her right now. Plus she's kind of whiny. Even though I've only seen her in one episode, Sarah Jane was awesome. I felt really bad for her, and I know I'll feel bad for Mickey too.

Yes Michelle Gomez does funny things to me too!

I think it’s important to remember, re Rose and Mickey, that at the start you get the impression that it’s Mickey treating Rose like shit, and he only seems to become really interested in her once she goes off with the Doctor (which is ever the way of things, we want what we can’t have.)

The undercurrent of Rose has always been a little unsettling, young woman who lost her father at an early age stuck in a dead end job until a worldly older man comes along with a time machine. Frankly take the Tardis out of the equation and it’s a BBC drama in many ways! Although I have no idea if RTD meant this (I really should read the writer’s tale at some point) but the fact that Rose only goes with him when he mentions that the Tardis travels in time as well as space tells me she was planning seeing her dad from the get go.

What makes it work in the first series is the chemistry between Piper and Eccleston, especially Eccleston, who plays it along the lines of “I love you, but I’m way too old for you so I’m never going to act on those feelings”

Then Tennant and Piper spend most of the second season giggling like schoolgirls :(

My feelings about Adric shift all the time. I think I liked him when I was a kid, then I grew up and hated him, but the last time I watched episodes with him in I found him quite interesting. For all that Turlough was supposed to be the untrustworthy one, Adric seems just as willing to turn on the Doctor if a better offer comes along! I’ll never be a particular fan, but the character is more interesting than I used to think he was.

In no particular order:

Sarah-Jane (okay, this one is in order)
Leela
Jo
Barbara
Ian
Amy
Rory

#1: K9
#2: Tied with Amy and Rory, especially later on during their travels
#3: Sarah Jane

Everyone else I've been rather ho-hum about, or downright disliked (Donna and Mickey, I'm looking at you two).

Curious--why did you "downright dislike" Mickey?

He was just incompetent, loud and obnoxious, and existed simply to add conflict to the Doctor and Rose's relationship. The first two were my main complaints with Donna, too. Especially the loud and obnoxious parts, of which she was miles ahead of Mickey.

I found this nice video tribute to Liz Sladen aka Sarah Jane Smith
