Who Wants To See...

I'm 18. I feel 28. You'd be suprised at people's reactions when I tell them my age. "Oh, come on. You are not 18. You look at least 25!"

Soooo... many posters on the BBS claim that I'm the youngest one here. Anyone younger?

I'm 18 as well I'm sure there is someone on here who is a year or two younger than us though.

I'm 48 and have gotten senior discounts since I was thirty-five. Since most senior discounts start at 60, how old do they think I am?

I was only carded once, and that was because they were carding everybody..

I suppose we should get this back on topic...

And I thought I was the youngest person here at 20. But I can outdo you guys with age though, because I was only 16 when I first started posting here.

You were 13? Fascinating!:vulcan:

The reason I asked is because, ever since I gave away my age, many senior members had an irritating tendency to address me with a rather patronizing tone.... End result: I now have to work all the harder to make sure certain folks treat me with the proper respect. *sigh*

I'm sure my fellow young'uns know what I'm talking about....

Not really. Sure they joked around about it but that's not anything new here.

I've never felt that here, but elsewhere I've certainly had the experience of being dismissed for my age. I'm still angry over not being able to vote as a teen when I knew more about politics than most adults. In fact, I lied about my age when I first registered at this website, in case there was something like a parental block and features that couldn't be accessed unless you were the magical 18. Artificial age limits are pointless exercises in domination with no true reflection of a person's actual judgment or maturity.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Except, of course the maturity factor in lying and mispresentation on a public forum. ;)

While 18 may SEEM arbitrary (since people mature at different rates or not at all), a legal age has to be set somewhere. You can't "give a test" on everything in life to everyone to see if they're qualified.

Certainly a 3-year-old doesn't have the same mental capacity to vote in a presidential election as a 50-year-old. Should a 12-year-old be allowed to buy and consume beer if s/he wants?

How about 8-year-olds driving cars?

I know a lot of contemporaries who, as teens, THOUGHT they were more well-informed and later in life admitted they were only fooling themselves. (My god, have you ever heard the discussions at coffee houses among college students? The same philosophic claptrap that's been going on for generations) Not saying there aren't ignorant "old people", but you only know what you think you know at the time.

Later on, you'll realize different. And that's something you just won't know or believe until you get there.

Meh. At worst, a victimless crime. At best, justified civil disobediance against arbitrary discrimination. Heck, if I never lied about my age, I never would have been able to get access to pornography before I was 18. And I don't want to imagine trying to get through high school without porn.

You can't "give a test" on everything in life to everyone to see if they're qualified.

Why not? It would certainly be fairer and more accurate than simply drawing a line somewhere.

I know a lot of contemporaries who, as teens, THOUGHT they were more well-informed and later in life admitted they were only fooling themselves.

Judgment is, of course, subjective, but when I said I 'knew more', I meant that in the objective sense. Public polling continuously revealed that I had better knowledge of party leaders, public platforms, etc., than the average of-age voter. Granted, that doesn't mean that I had greater insight, but I like to think that a better-informed voter is a better voter all around.

(My god, have you ever heard the discussions at coffee houses among college students?

Guess what I do eight months out of the year. ;)

There are a number of people here who are less than half my age whose opinions I respect and take seriously, but they did things the old-fashioned way: they earned the respect they get. No doubt coincidentally, none of them use their signatures to call half or more of the people here fools.

Granted. However, to be fair, I've seen some signatures which make mine look like nothing.

There was this one which made a sex joke about Laura Bush, for example....

(Darn, I sure hope that last comment doesn't start another super-argument which eventually closes this thread.)

Just because someone else does something stupider it doesn't mean your stupid things are acceptable.

And I'm sure that guy didn't get much respect for that signature, either.

 Has somebody been stupid here?

And I'm sure that guy didn't get much respect for that signature, either.

I'm moderate to liberal, and I don't see anything wrong with his signature. Unless you're meaning he's left-handed, and, therefore, sinister? (using the old-fashioned terms, that is.)
