Reading a bunch of articles lately that say Matt Smith wants to return to Doctor Who when Peter Capaldi's tenure is up. Do you like this idea? Do you think TPTB would even consider it?

All those articles may come from a single rumor or offhand statement by Matt.

There could be a couple ways to go about this.

The Doctor could sort of degenerate for a period of time. Simply change back into 11(13) and be the same Doctor for a season or a limited number of episodes if there is a plan to go back to Capaldi.

He could be a whole new Doctor (revisiting an old favorite), with a different personality. No reason he would have to be the same as 11(13) if he's a new incarnation. This would let us see how good an actor Matt really is.

Personally, I'm hoping for Capaldi in series 11 if only to see how he's handled by a different showrunner.

I like Matt Smth (he's my favorite NuWho Doctor), and I'd like to see him in, say, a Doctor team up episode, but I don't think it would make sense for him to come back full time. I want Capaldi to do a series without Moffat, then they should probably just move on, not look back when it comes to the main Doctor.

Loved Matt Smith but no. When Capaldi's time is up it's time for a new actor.

Didn't a similar rumor go around at one time that Tennant would come back?

I voted Yes. So far, I'm the first person to vote Yes.

I'd love to have Matt Smith back. I loved his performance as the Doctor.

If Smith were cast as a future Doctor, I'd want him to play the role differently than he did five years ago. No fez, no bowtie, no tweed. But then, why cast Smith?

I've been thinking about Smith's idea for a "two Doctors" season. I actually think I'd prefer that, a season of Smith and Capaldi teaming up to fight a Big Bad that neither can defeat on their own.

I really wanted Smith to stay on one more season and properly finish up the storylines he was involved in. Smith had a huge amount of momentum after Day of the Doctor, and that all went to heck with his awful regeneration story and Capaldi's weak start. (I think Capaldi is great, but a rough start.)

However, I don't want Smith back as the regular Doctor now. It's time to move forward. Hopefully he can come back in another multi-Doctor story. That would be great.

I would love for Smith to come back for a multi-Doctor story. But not as the same-old Eleventh Doctor full-time. That would be a backwards move for the show. Now, if he came back into the show as the Thirteenth Doctor with the 11th face but a different personality, I would be willing to try that out.

No, no, no.
We had an over extended good-bye.
His story is done. It would feel like a massive step backwards bringing him back.
He can come back for anniversaries.

He can come back for anniversaries.
And given how Time of the Doctor played out, he's probably the only Doctor who can come back whenever without worrying about being too old.

Well, I guess they can have Tennant back, too. Provided he's playing the hand-job twin.

This is just coming from DWM 500, in which Moffat says he ran into Smith recently and he expressed regret at leaving the show too early. Nothing more.

If anything, Mcgann would be the one I want to come back! It's justified to, as we have not seen much from him besides the 1996 movie and Night of the Doctor on YouTube.

I second Paul McGann. Even if it's just a one-season flashback arc or something. He deserves a run.

Absolutely McGann could do a flashback mini-series or movie. I would love to see that. Maybe CBC could get the rights if the beeb doesn't want to do it.

Smith is probably my favourite Doctor, and I wish he'd done another series (at least!) but the past is the past and, barring multi-Doctor stories-I think that should be it for Eleven (although that notion of a two Doctor season!).

The notion of Smith coming back and playing a different Doctor is just pointless, why would I want him to play a different Doctor? I liked the one he played just fine!

No. He had his chance. I'd love to see him return in multi-Doctor stories, but I'd rather have Capaldi stay in the role and, hopefully, get a full decent season out of him. So far, he's not had a single good season from top to bottom.

I wouldn't want any doctor to come back via "degeneration", let alone Smith, my least favourite of the whole bunch. If he did come back my preferred method would be via a prequel series (perhaps set when he was on Trenzalore?), also with a current series with Capaldi or a new doctor running alongside it....but if anyone deserves a prequel series lets face it, it's McGann, even Tennant deserves one more seeing he's more popular overall.

The McGann idea is great, but it would have been perfect to see it happen this year when we just have one measly episode at Christmas.

^ I couldn't agree more with that sentiment. If BBC are worried that such a project would detract from the main show, this year would have been a great opportunity.
The Beeb aren't very good at thinking outside the "box", are they?

I think everyone would agree Paul McGann's 8th doctor needs this. Audio books just aren't the same thing as actual episodes IMO

McGann as the 13 doctor would be brilliant.

Hardly anyone knows what his doctor's personality was like outside of the TV movie and audio books. He'd practically be a clean slate to the general audience.

He needs a TV season.
