Who The Hell Is This Justin Beiver?!?

Every once in a while a young dude or two with that kind of haircut who answers to the Queen makes the girls shriek by writing catchy tunes about how much they like girls. Who cares?

That's right, Bieber = The Beatles.

*runs far far far away from this thread*
No need to run away, because I thought the very same thing. The Beatles were originally dismissed as being another "teen" sensation at first by their critics, known more for causing legions of girls to scream than for their music.

It wasn't until after that initial teenage insanity died down a bit that people really started looking at their songs, IMO.

Very few acts can go from being the "teeny-bopper" sensation of the moment to one of the greatest recording artists of all time...

Well, when you put it that way... it's not as if the Jonas Brothers will ever be The Beatles. The difference is that they were actually compelling and had something going for them that kept their momentum. All that's keeping the Jonas Brothers going is Disney Dollars. Once they're too old they'll be dropped by Disney, and they'll be nothing. They'll be forgotten.

I think that's also part of Britney Spears' and Jessica Simpson's problem. They used to be popular with the teens, but they've grown older, yet they haven't really matured in that sense. They're trying to keep the same image as they grow older, but the audience just isn't the same and they aren't fitting in, hence all their problems. They're just not believable in that image of theirs anymore. The older they get, the tougher it is for anyone to buy their image, and that includes the teenies that is their audience. If there's one thing to say about Madonna, love her or hate her, at least she's kept up with the times, constantly innovating herself.

I hate this kid only because he made me feel old for the first time. I'm 26 and I keep up pretty well with what's going on in pop culture and the media. I'm usually tangentially aware of horrible shit that everyone else loves but I can't stand.

Then this motherfucker rolls along. He's like the biggest thing on the planet and my younger cousin starts singing his praises and I'm like "Justin What? You crazy kid." This Bieber asshole turned me into my Dad and I will hate him till the end of time for it.

And then I saw him on SNL and heard that the chorus to one of his songs is literally "Baby, Baby, Baby" and laughed my ass off.

I slept well that night.

I'd rather my kid listen to Marilyn Manson, Slipknot or Lamb Of God.

Fuk that Disney sh!t!!!

You are all old.

The last thing we do before we die is to lash out at the next generation and complain that they're idiots for the things they like.

Or have you all forgotten how you all treated that Transformers cartoon from the 80's as if Leonardo DaVinci himself had created it?

Trust me, your parents were not jumping out of bed to watch that every weekend.

Because each generation has less and less to look up to as good role models...

Is it any wonder why our entertainment industry is so much in trouble? One Generation has Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc. And another has people like Justin Bieber. If you look at any other generation, be it the 80's or the 70's or the 60's, you had more to look up to, and they were larger than life.

Nearly every network or channel now has a reality show. I can't channel surf without seeing more than a dozen airing at any given time. Sometimes, like at 1pm, I can't find anything worthwhile to watch because the airwaves are all taken over by reality shows. It's cheap to make, and it's fluff.

Oh, what an interesting point!

Yeah, watching the Amazing Race is "fluff" that will rot your brain...but looking up to Gilligan? Well that'll put you ahead a whole year in school!

Just because we liked something as children doesn't mean it sucks. And I don't think I'm just being like a bitter old fart saying that. To be honest, there are a lot of things I liked as a kid that I can see as being only appealing for the immature, as well as things that were clever and can still be enjoyed as a mature adult. For example...

Stuff I liked as a kid that I can now recognize as mostly shallow childhood distractions -

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers
Spice Girls
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze"
"Spider-Man" (1994)
"Batman Forever"

Stuff I liked as a kid that I find smart enough to still enjoy as an adult -

Alternative rock
"Batman: the Animated Series"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" 1987
"X-Men" Animated
"Looney Tunes"

Exactly right.

My point was that there is smart and dumb stuff both then and now. Nothing has changed. (Although you wouldn't know it to hear from some folks.)

I don't totally hate him like some people here seem to but I think that he is quite icky - not just because of the hideous haircut that I want to shave off but because of the lyrics in his songs, which are all about the girls he wants to date and take home and all that, which sounds totally wrong coming from someone who sounds like he has the voice of a 10 year old.

Look at it and weep, haterz!

How is hating on a teen idol make you old? I hated on teen idols when I was a kid. I would ridicule my cousin and her obsession over New Kids on the Block every time she talked about them or I was over at my Uncles house and saw the backpack or lunchbox or whatever other overpriced item she bought with their likeness.

I guess that means I was old when I was 11.

Some people just don't like mainstream stuff shoved down their throats no matter the age they are.

If Justin Bieber is mentioned then you're probably already watching or listening to the "mainstream". Stories about guys like him are what they do.

There comes a time when someone gets famous enough that even avoiding the mainstream isn't enough.

*THIS*. I don't watch Disney Channel, MTV, or whatever else passes for a Music Channel this day. I don't listen to radio stations, I get exposed to this guy by internet sites. I go to zap2it to see how a show I watch did in the ratings last night, or to check out a recap of an episode and bam there's like 3 or 4 stories on the guy.

I'm reading about the massive oil slick hitting the Gulf Coast and bam there's a story on CNN that pops up about him canceling some concert.

This.

On the other hand, having that kind of crap thrown at one left and right can feed the impetus to find something better. For instance, my overwhelming disgust with the New Kids and their fans drove me right into the arms of Perry Ferrell and Trent Reznor. One must choose sides, and all that.

His hair should be enough to warrant his disappearance into obscurity.

Look at it and weep, haterz!

You just made my point. You still did hear about him. It was only a matter of time. I didn't hear about him either until a few weeks ago when I was watching the Junos (Canada's equivalent to the Grammy's) where he performed. I managed to escape him until then. He's inescapable... seriously.
