Bryan Singer might be a good option, he is a Trek fan and certainly can handle big movies. Though I think he might be busy with other movies for the moment.

I would not mind Jonathan Frakes directing the film,
but somehow I dont see that happening, I could be wrong though..

Singer can't do it as XMen Apocalypse is due summer 2016.

Maybe Paramount are stalling for hoping Abrams will come back and ST3 gets moved for a Xmas 2016 release?..(maybe that'd be possible time wise?)

My problem with Frakes doing is is more down to his style than experience, FC & INS both had a by-the-numbers 'TV' look to them (never seen Thunderbirds) at least JJ has a great sense of style to his movies.

Then again the budget for ST3 will probably be more than FC & INS put together, so maybe he would make a better looking flick, who knows. Either way I can't see him getting the gig.

Ben Stiller might be a choice also. He's a Trek fan and has experience directing major motion pictures, and he's a "big" name as well in Hollywood.

Bryan Singer would be the perfect choice but it's not gonna happen because he's signed on for X-Men: Apocalypse.

I voted for Kosinski. I think his visual style is closest to Abrams' but with less lens flare.

Although I think Frakes would be an interesting but an unlikely choice, because of his Trek creds. The publicity would be a great way to sell Trek's 50th anniversary, sort of the coming together of different Trek incarnations for one film.

Other choices that would be good would be Wyatt or Liman. I'm not sure if Wright would be a good fit, considering what happened with Ant-Man, Paramount may want more of a yes man. They could go with Cornish who was a leading contender at one point until Orci scared him off. Or they could go with William Eubank who has made a couple of distinct sci-fi flicks for low budgets but look great (Love and The Signal).

The idea of Frakes directing a TOS story is what interests me because he would have to approach it differently from his TNG work and I'd be fascinated to see that. Having seen his TV work post-Trek, he's very good at adopting the style a show established. Just because Orci hung around on the movie sets a lot doesn't make him a more qualified director (ya know, cause he isn't one).

We've seen Frakes direct episodes of DS9, Voyager and Enterprise, and his direction was just as unimpressive and bland to me as his TNG episodes and "movies."

It doesn't matter if he's directing the new crew, in his mind, he's directing Star Trek. It's very likely his adaptive style could revert back to the Berman-era of episode and movie direction like an old habit. I could be wrong.

I think Frakes would be smart enough not to direct STXIII in the same style as the Berman era films. Frankly, as far as Trek films go, nothing has really felt "cinematic" since THE MOTION PICTURE. nuTrek still felt like Abrams' TV work, only with a massive budget and ILM at their disposal, but I wouldn't say his direction was a detriment. If he were still directing, I'd be totally fine with that as long as he got rid of his usual posse. Thankfully he did that with STAR WARS.

Tim Burton.

No seriously.

Dark, Gothic Romulus. Depp as Harry Mudd. HBC as the Romulan Commander. And the Courage theme done Oingo Boingo style.

What's not to like?

Ron Howard? Just a thought.

How about Gore Verbinski? After Rango and Lone Ranger he might be had for a good price. ;)

The fact that "Wild Card" is winning is testament to the fact that many of us want separate things.

Wright's doing pretty well, though. Which is... interesting.
