IT WAS AN INSIDE JOB!

The Minbari, might have just been sitting there like goons, waiting for Babylon 1 to blow up and nothing was happening, seriously how long are they going to wait for racist human terrorists to emerge and... There is no way that humans without the backing of a trillionaire or a super power was going to get past a Minbari Security system 11 light years from home.

At the very least the Minbari Leadership would have had to have turned off the cameras as they saw the terrorists approaching, if they did not first have to trick the Earthican mad bombers from accepting (probably) Narn ordinance...

Or was it the Drakh every damn time? Although surely the Drakh are smart enough to know that if Babylon 1 never got blown to smithereens, then Babylon 4 is never built, or are we really supposed to believe that these geniuses only noticed the "return" of the mythic Minbari outpost from the last war, just a couple hours before the big green bastard became fully operational?

I got the impression that only the Minbari knew where Babylon 4 originally came from.

So yeah, I suppose the Minbari could have intentionally sabotaged the first three stations in a predestination paradox. It actually makes a certain kind of sense, since the ones behind the actions were never revealed, and it stretches credibility that the humans would have been so sloppy as to allow three stations to be destroyed in a row.

I forgot to add the most obvious culprits to my greasy poll: The Vorlons.

Also a third faction of Minbari: The Warrior Cast who killed Del Varner in The Gathering, although the reason they were flailing about so indifferently was a staggering degree of ignorance about their own very ancient and very recent history.

The first three Babylon stations were destroyed via acts of sabotage during their construction. It is possible they may have been destroyed by humans who did not approve of the Babylon Project.

That was the party line. We don’t know if that was the actual truth. It just seems fishy to me that the humans couldn’t prevent three stations from being destroyed by sabotage from other humans. Was there no such thing as security?

Hey now- Are we forgetting that that one technician who kept leaving the station and that's why they exploded?

Jinxo was very insecure, and that is why Security did not stand a chance, but What about the Technomages? The novels say that they had "forgotten" that they collaborated with the Shadows a thousand years earlier.... Which is bullshit. If the Shadows survived the last war with three times as many resources in the new time line without Babylon 4 intruding on prehistory, then so would the technomages who were putting everything they had into running from the Shadows.

Point is, with three times the fire power, the Shadows might not even need the Technomages for the next war, and with three times the resources the Technomages can run harder and faster from the mean bastards holding their choke collar until the Shadows can't find them, which they didn't anyway, but it's not like the Technomages knew that in 2152.

In WWE, Delenn says she didn't realize that the ancient Minbari starbase was Babylon 4 until she began serving as ambassador to Babylon 5 (gotta love that famed Minbari insularity; I guess no one on the Grey Council even bothered to look at a drawing of Earth's fancy new space stations, even after they started paying for one), so that would count against it being the Minbari (or, an idea that occurred to me just now, that it was the opposite, and Babylon 4 was the one that was finished because the Minbari stepped in to protect it, knowing they'd need it later/earlier).

Likewise, if it was the Shadows' agents who destroyed Babylons 1 through 3, why would they wait until B4 was finished before attacking it? And in a fairly overt fashion, too.

No, I think the simplest explanation is correct; a lot of people on Earth didn't want anything to do with aliens, and either deluded themselves into thinking the Battle of the Line was a victory so they could just defeat anyone who opposed them, or though the Minbari surrender was some kind of subversion, and that a distant space station where aliens could manipulate Earth policy was a terrible idea. A mix of terrorists and bystanders willing to look the other way because they didn't believe in the project seems like enough to set things in motion.

IIRC, the original Babylon 5 TTRPG opens with a vignette of the bridge of an EarthForce starship arriving to provide security to the Babylon 3 construction site, and no one in the crew is a fan of the idea. Right after someone points out that at least they'll have rotated to another mission by the time the station is finished and any nasty aliens show up, Babylon 3 explodes.

And then there are also the countless other alien races who might have had a word to say about the strongest competitors collaborating.
I wouldn’t put it past the Narn to sabotage the stations just because the Centauri were sponsoring it.
