Who owns the rights to Lost?

Is it ABC? If ABC was pleased with the ratings, what would the odds be of them going around JJ or any of the writers, and making some sort of spin-off?

It's ABC. And I think it's only a matter of time until we see the franchise continue in some form. Maybe not in the next couple years though. But that's just my guess.

ABC does, and I'm guessing we'll be seeing something else in 5 years or so... until then, we'll probably gets some books, comics, etc. filling in stuff.

As everyone has said above, ABC, but I'd bet we don't have a 5 year wait before we start seeing more Lost, especially if none of the new ABC shows do very well this season (and even more will be ending their runs soon as well) so there will be gaps to fill in their schedule and they will be wanting to get a show on the air that has a built in fan base.

As a side note, does anyone know what the ratings were like for the last episode?

^

It won the night with 13.5 million viewers. I don't know what the 18-49 rating was off the top of my head but it was decent. In any event, it didn't smash any records by any means. Just healthy.

To put it in perspective, the show's highest ratings were for "Man of Science, Man of Faith" somewhere in the neighborhood of 22 or 23 million.

The ratings were probably still higher then a lot of shows ABC airs and any spin-off series would probably just build on those numbers.

My guess is if they did do a new series it would be about the Dharma Initiative or the Hanso Foundation. It probably wouldn't even mention the Island or the events on it until a big season ending episode two or three seasons in.

A whole new cast of characters. Maybe focusing on a new hire or member being brought into the organization and discovering all of the mysteries and such as the show progressed. Maybe a show kind of like Fringe, but from the Massive Dynamic point of view.

That's how I would see them doing it.

That would indeed be cool. But I don't see it happening.

It's a fun idea to the small subset of people who care enough about the show to post online. Also, you have to take into account that there were about 3-4 million (or more) people watching Lost just to see how it ends. That doesn't reflect the show's real base of viewers.

That said, I'd watch the hell out of the show you just described, just based on the premise.

Whatever it is would suck by comparison. Copies always do. Every TV phenomenon has been something original. Clones pale.

Like Star Trek: TNG & Deep Space 9? Fraser? Lavern & Shirley? Mork & Mindy? Caprica? Crusade? Xena? Like those?

Yeah, you're right. But this show's earned enough good will with me that I'd try whatever they did. A show would be a tricky proposition.

However, I think a novel or two would be well worth the read. As long as it was in the same spirit of the show. And given the ending of the show it would take a creative mind to find something cool story-wise.

I'm glad ABC leaving LOST alone for now. We all need the next few years to let the finale sink it before we are ready for any possible sequel.

I can't see them waiting too long unless they lose steam. Two or three years and it might still be fresh on people's minds, but five or more and people will probably have moved on, or someone might want to "reimagine" it.

The only spinoff I want to see is the sideways Sawyer-Miles cop show. Nothing else!

The final numbers were 13.567 million viewers, 7.5/13 HH, 5.8/13 A18-49.

The season average was 10.155 million viewers per episode, up slightly (2.6%) from season five.

I remember reading an article about it here, which states basically the same stuff other people in this thread are: no way ABC is letting a lucrative franchise out of their grasp.

For some reason, I also remember reading an article about how they would be willing to remake the show in a couple of years, either as a new TV show or a movie. That would just be...weird.

If they do any continuation I hope they do it with mostly new characters rather than bringing these characters back and undoing their closure. A movie or series about Hurley and Ben's time running the island, with the other characters being new, might have potential. Maybe Hurley could run the island like Fantasy Island, with Ben the Tattoo to his Roarke.

Thanks for that link. It's exactly what I was looking for.

I found this exec's quote curious: "We want to keep it alive but make sure we maintain the integrity of the franchise. We're not about milking this thing for all that it is right now; it's important to see this live for years to come."

How could it not be milking it? The producers have said the story is finished and that they are done. Continuing on any kind of franchise is essentially milking it.

Also, I kind of fear for any producer of a spin-off because inevitably any burden that was placed on the previous producers is now on them, particularly with the mysteries.

As a side note, word on the street is that ABC is looking to redo Alias. It would be a "reimagining" of the original series.

So they obviously have no problem remaking a past successful shows that they have aired, even when the show has only been off the air for what? 4 years? 5 years? A remake already? Not a spin off?
