Who or what, would you philosophically risk your life for ?

There's a famous (probably apocryphal) one using internet translators where the expression “out of sight, out of mind” is translated into Russian and then back into English and comes back as “invisible idiot”.
Another version has the phrase translated as “blind and insane.” And there's yet another story about a computer translating the phrase “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” from English to Russian and back to English; it comes out as “The vodka is strong but the meat is rotten.”

I first heard those stories decades ago, long before the Internet. Computers have been around for quite a while, you know.

As for what I would philosophically risk my life for . . . well, maybe if the Earth was invaded and taken over by alien giant ants, I'd do my part to help the resistance movement. Like, I'd go out at night and write "ANTS GO HOME" on a wall. In bad Latin.

I don't need to philosophize. I've done it for a total stranger, who didn't appreciate the gesture.

Why? Because I just couldn't not do it, and I doubt I could not do it again. I can sleep at night because of it.

This is how I feel in theory, but I think I'd be much less brave in reality than you!

I wouldn't call it brave as much as I would call it masochistic and self-destructive.

I don't think I would risk my life for someone else. There's always a part of me that remains pretty rational and/or emotionally detached, so I don't think I'd play the odds if they were especially risky.

:wtf: Yeah, because the desire to help others is such a bad thing.

Fat bit of good it did. Not only did the person I help go right back to the guy who almost killed him, but his refusal to cooperate in the resultant proceedings aided in the systematic disenfrancisement that ruined my life and allowed a repeat felony offender to walk away with hardly a slap on the wrist, endangering the community he ends up in next.

You think that's a good thing?

Trust me on this one.

I'd call it noble. And I'd be proud to call such a person my friend.
