Me, I'd have to say these people:

- Kevin Millar. He's never played for any of my favorite teams (Yankees, Mets), in fact he was once a Red Sock, but he is just so freaking hilarious that you really can't help but like the guy.

- Orlando Hudson. See above, but multiply by about 1,000,000.

- On a serious note: Dave Dravecky. He has been a major source of inspiration in my life. For those not in the know: Dave was forced to retire from pitching when cancer took his left arm. I remember this one thing he said, which affected me greatly: "If I can no longer pitch, then who is Dave Dravecky?" It's caused me to re-examine who *I* am, and what defines that. Linky

Favourite player who's not on my favourite team is easy; I have no problem appreciating an athlete's skill when it doesn't negatively affect my team. "Favourite player from a team I hate" would be more difficult.

If I had to pick a favorite Phillies player, for instance it would probably be Jamie Moyer; from the Red Sox, David Ortiz.

As far as the 'teams I hate' thing goes, I tend to only know the players that I hate on the teams that I hate, making that question rather difficult. But the Penguins have employed former Flyers frequently, so I suppose that makes Arron Asham my favorite Penguin.

Hell, the Hurricanes were my 'second team' for a bit because I liked Brind'Amour so much. I remember the day the Flyers traded him for Primeau - I was at indoor soccer practice at the RHS auxiliary gym, and my Dad picked me up and said "you won't be happy - the Flyers traded Brind'Amour for some guy from the Hurricanes," and I had to tell my Dad that the 'some guy' was probably Keith Primeau.

I remember kids in grade school arbitrarily selecting favorite baseball players simply because their baseball cards were "hot" and they collected them, back before the internet, when only a handful of games were on TV each week (less than that if you didn't have cable) and the newspaper was your source for game summaries and stats.

Names like Ricky Jordan, Jerome Walton, Kevin Seitzer, Matt Nokes and Cory Snyder were thrown around as being favorites.

Of course, no one told us back then that baseball cards were like stock markets and you needed to sell high, since my $10 (at the time) Mike Greenwell rookie card won't even go for 25 cents now.
