In another thread trekkiedane said that Hercule Poirot was a greater detective than Sherlock Holmes. I disagree, so I thought we should take it to a poll to see what other people think.

So people - who is the greatest detective of the two?

The outcome of the poll is easy to predict; the one who's most famous will win, in this case, that's Holmes.

I imagine that in Britain and Australia, and in certain European countries Poirot is as well-known as Holmes is.

Correct! - Even if there are way more episodes of Poirot!

What about all those old movies and TV series about Sherlock Holmes such as the Basil Rathbone movies.

Most of those are just re-makes of the same ol' stories -well, actually the old ones are the originals and there have been dozens of re-makes of those ever since.
(and I wouldn't count those WW2 propaganda films as actual Holmes stories!)
Agreed!

Tough call between Batman and Columbo.

If they ever did a crossover of the two it would be incredible
Let's just say Columbo doesn't need time to prepare. His time is best spent bumbling around and humoring his victim before unleashing the smackdown in the final scene. :bolian:

Poirot and Columbo are both of the same school of detective work. You come up with a flimsy case and then use that to trick the murderer in to incriminating him or herself.
