Who is the Enterprise security chief?

Never specified. Doubt it's Cupcake, though - he's more your basic redshirt.

Hehehe.

Unless it's Rand.

As long as it's not Chekov!

(incidentally, the early script and novelization have him as weapons officer. Huh? "Weapons sytems and shields on standby"??)

I think the security chief should be a new character. I'd favour an alien woman just because we don't have much of either. I went for an andorian woman in my fan story based on Suzie Plakson's andorian from Enterprise.

Rand and Colt were not commissioned officers so while they might be deputies if they are petty officers, traditionally a lieutenant or lt-commander was in charge. That is not to say that the butterfly effect could not lead to them being a more senior rank. Rand has appeared in the ongoing comic as a yeoman so she's off the list. It is worth noting though that in the ongoing comic the characters who were yeomen in TOS are certainly acting more like security guards now. I certainly hope that Rand gets to do something in the new movie.

Colt was addressed as a lieutenant in "The Cage."

Besides, alternate reality.
She was only 17 at the time and she was addressed as Yeoman.

In the tie in comics, Rand is a Yeoman and her job is...I don't know what the hell her job is. She's only been in three so far, and it's quite unclear what she does, but Spock did refer to her as Yeoman Rand.

She was addressed as both Yeoman and Lieutenant. I just watched the episode the other night. Colt was most definitely an officer.

Again, this is an alternate reality. Forget what happened in the old one, because anything can be changed in the new one.

^ He referred to One as Lieutenant. You might have misunderstood, but as I stated, she was only 17 in The Menagerie. She'd be early 20's in the latest installment.

Memory Alpha's entry gives her rank as Lieutenant and mentions a second draft script that gives her age as 20.

^It would be interesting to know where the site got that from because her rank, other than Yeoman wasn't stated in the script or the show. I know MA likes to stick to canon, but it is updated by Trekkies.

Chekov was never involved with security on TOS. That came with the movies.

IIRC, explaining that Chekov was off getting retraining in Security dates as far back as his character's absence in TAS, and Koenig being fitted for a red uniform for "Phase II".

Also, some fans feel he was working security at the time of Space Seed to accound for why Khan recognized him.
