Along the same lines as the Best Chief Engineer thread, I wonder who gets the pick as best First Officer.

You can use whatever guidelines you want, but mine are... command ability, being able to stand up to the captain when necessary, knowledge, overall demeanor.

For me, my pick is Kira. She definitely lets her opinion be known to Sisko, but still trusts his decisions when he makes them. She gets the job done when she is on her own or in command of her own group. She has a keen strategic mind. Her demeanor could be considered a 'hothead', but that got smoothed out over the years. And of all the XOs of the various shows, I think she grew the most.

What about your picks?

Considering that Burnham mutinied, then got her captain killed, I’m going to say .. Spock, with an honorable mention for Will Riker.

I voted for Spock, Riker, Kira and Chakotay. They are completely different.

And yes, there was Number One aka Una aka Chapel aka Lwaxana aka Morgan Leffler. :D

One of my favourite things about TNG was its traditional naval atmosphere. More like Age of Sail gentlemen sailors than sci-fi crew. The first officer really was the first officer. The person who kept up the crew's spirits, acted as a bridge between captain and crew, and took care of the ship's everyday organisation, all while offering advice.

For that reason, Riker.

Spock was the better character. Riker was the better First Officer.
