Who Is The Best CHIEF Engineer?

For me it's a dead heat between Scotty and O'Brien, but I'd probably lean more towards Miles. Not only was he an expert with Starfleet tech but also integrating it with Cardassian. He had just as much leadership experience as Scotty or the others as well as experience at other stations such as helm control.

Scotty - great engineer, great commander when he had the center seat, great in a fistfight when necessary, could drink just about anyone under the table.

I love Geordi and O'Brien and Trip, but Scotty really was the best of the lot. Plus, you just knew that Jimmy Doohan brought a lot of his own real life experiences into the portrayal, which were priceless.

Should Stamets be counted on the list? I think I would go with Scotty. He has command experience in the big chair and nobody can beat his commitment to his work. Everyone else had a outside life but he was married to his engines.

Isn't he like the chief mushroom engineer? Disco must have someone else in charge of those warp engines, to vacuum the dust out of them once a month if nothing else.

1. Torres she had no Starfleet bases to fall back on 70,000 ly from home and got the ship home in one piece
2. Trip he had no Starfleet bases to fall back cos there were none. He did his job while pining for T'Pol
3. O'Brian a non com who married Starfleet and Cardie tech and should have got a field promotion to Lt Commander
4. Geordi from junior navigator to Chief Engineer in two seasons
5. Kelvin Chekov from junior navigator to Chief Engineer in 1 year
6. Kelvin Scotty for standing up to perfect hair Kirk
7. Prime Scotty cos someone has to come last

But what makes a good CHIEF engineer?
Being like Scotty.
All the ones from our shows have their miracle working monents and episodes...
Especially Scotty.
all are quite capable, intelligent, creative, and adaptable...
But none more so than Scotty.
But from a leadership standpoint, who do you think was the best?
Oh for cryin' out loud, it's SCOTTY!!!

Scotty, he set the standard for all to follow..He command abilities were without question almost as good as Kirk's and better than Spock

If by "best CHIEF engineer" you mean as department supervisor I'd probably go with La Forge, he did have a large crew to oversee, delegated tasks as needed, and kept on top of admin and personnel matters with apparent ease.

If it's the best actual engineer then it's a bit murky. Scotty is obviously a miracle worker, La Forge was good enough to get the job on the flagship (eventually beating out a lot of competition), O'Brien learned out in the field coming up through the NCO ranks and skilled enough to handle the task of meshing Cardassian, Bajoran and Starfleet technology together on DS9, Torres has skills and street smarts using little to keep cobbled together ships running before getting a state of the art engine to play with and keeping it running in the DQ, Trip (despite hints he may only have gotten the job thanks to his bestie) is again obviously good enough to have that post on his own merit as an engineer (definitely not as a diplomat though).

If the question is who's the best chief of an engineering crew, I'd like to say Geordi, as his was probably the biggest crew, & he does eventually become a starship captain, which one might assume pushes him ahead of Scotty, but Scotty was 3rd in command of the original Enterprise WHILE the chief engineer. I actually think he's probably got an edge on knowing how to lead a crew, & by the time he's old enough to have opted for his own command like LaForge did, he was old enough to realize that wasn't his place in the universe, which means he's probably wiser than all the others too. Nothing wiser than a man who knows that right where he is, is right where he's supposed to be. Hell, even Kirk fumbled about with that. Geordi too... & O'Brien, come to think of it.
