I'm going to start with this video about hobbit holes from my favourite channel to do with buildings and architecture Damilee. She's great

^^ I don't care about books on that subject, I want to know what YOU think of the subject, I don't mind you posting links but "here's a link" isn't doing anything for discussion so elaborate a bit, help a little to get things going okay? :)

As for architecture, I'm quite fond of brutalism, bare concrete, function over everything else, straight lines, no thrills or frills.
Like the Long Lines building, that sort of mood I like. :mallory:

Or Habitat 67

So call me weird but that's a style I like. :mallory:

I always buy my fans. I never build them. /j

Anyone think that arcologies are a good idea or will ever be built? There was The Line mooted in Saudi, but did it ever get started? Such a linear construction seems inefficient to me, but there is the Byker Wall in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the UK.

Brutalist construction has its place here and there. It evokes Planet of the Apes and TOS

There was a YouTube bit about how easy modern window placement is, and how complex brickwork used to be for window treatments.

Another video compared German walls to American construction—shoddy.

We are losing craftsmen, I fear.

One thing for folks to consider is the use of hurricane clips to make structures a bit stronger. Maybe *real* shutters?

I have long wanted to design a house such that its walls are as thick as bank vaults—that’s where my books would go.

I would have bathrooms, kitchens, hot water tanks—all plumbing—a good five feet BELOW everything else. No more water damage.

Now, for the kitchen, the sinks and all appliances sit atop metal grates about an inch below the kitchen floor…everything leaning back.

No water on that bloody floor.

Behind all of that—and a few feet lower—is an all concrete walkway…such that water heaters are at the far end—and the plumbing behind the kitchen sinks are at head level, so plumbers, repairmen and such don’t have access to the whole bloody house and can’t steal.

I learned a long time ago to hate workmen due to bad experiences—so I want to design residences such that your books, collectibles and such can never be destroyed due to bumbling fools.

With this design, the living space stays dry, and the workmen access only the utilities—and they wade in the crap for a change.

I will do them the service of not having to get on the floor to fix sinks.

The pipes are at head/waist level behind a wall.

I can leave that door open and lock everything else up so I don’t have to miss work waiting for them to show up.

This also makes for a safer home for children, such that service providers can’t get at them. Function over form works with Brutalist designs.

Being in tornado country—I want nothing less than an Inman Embassy.

I have suffered from water damage and theft in my life—doors kicked open—and it would be nice if designs existed to keep tragedies from occurring.

I don’t care what the building itself looks like.

I think money was the stumbling block of The Line and other factors. I'm pretty sure I watched a video about it by Damilee

@publiusr :bolian:

There are arcologies or similar already here.

This one seemed to have functioned pretty okay and for that location it probably is a good idea, everything inside the building and cold weather outside the building, but it has been allowed to fall into disrepair which is a pity

Also there's this one:
Experimental and more of an education center but interesting.

I guess it might not even be so far fetched to create these, with climate change it's best to well, keep the climate out.
Or take it to extremes like Biosphere 2

Or like the Montreal Biodome

And of course the sustainable city, think that is the route we'll go.

Back to architecture, art deco is also one of the styles I like, Empire State building, Chrysler building, bit more frills but still without too much greebles.

Awnings are a piece of "Simple Tech" that many in modern society seem to have forgotten about since the advent of modern AC in the home.

We can easily lower our Power Consumption while having a nice cooler home with Awnings over each Window & Door.
