Who had the oddest career path?

Archer doesn;t seem so odd. Not unusual for a military man to wind up in politcs: Washington, Grant, Eisenhower.

Always thought it was... Not very believable that Data's career seems to have frozen the minute he joined the Enterprise-D. All those years later he's still the same position, and not even promoted to full Commander. Surely discrimination against androids in the UFP can't be that bad?

Is it ever explained how Geordi becomes chief Engineer? I remember him being Helmsman and then "blam!" he's the boss.

I always just assumed (and this is complete fan wank) that the Enterprise's systems were so new that it was training Engineers for its first year who would go on to other CE projects and Geordi was brought on always with the intent of being CE he just had to wait for the position to open up post training period.

There are a couple of times in S1 where he does CE "like" duties and Picard tells a story in Season 5 or 6 of why he picked Geordi as an officer, because of his ingenuity and determination.

This is covered to an extent by the last A time to books where Riker realises that his staying as First Officer had held back Data's career.

I think Ranks and straight progressions are something that you cannot give too much thought to in Star Trek otherwise it all starts to fall to pieces...

How about Chapel? From nurse to M.D. in what was supposed to be 18 months? Then the last time we see her in STIV, she's working some computer in Starfleet Command.

I always had the impression from the dialog in "What Little Girls Are Made Of" that Chapel was a researcher who signed up for Starfleet as a nurse in hopes of finding the missing Roger Korby. Perhaps with that background, she had already completed must of her doctorial program and was just shy of an medical degree. After the FYM, she just returned and finished it or earned the remaining credits while serving aboard the Enterprise.

Still, wouldn't that mean she went from recent medical grad to CMO on a federation starship (before McCoy came back) in a very short time.

Maybe she used Kirk's line from TMP to get the job, "...five-years out there dealing with..." Perhaps, her field experience trumped any other considerations like a recent degree or a residency. Not knowing much about the character prior to TOS, just that she was a bio researcher and was going to get married. Lots of things could've been there. But it is still rather quick from just the basics known on the character, which I always thought was a poorly done one -- she lusts after men who are completely devoid of outward emotion (Korby and Spock).

I would say Will Riker. Imagine prepairing to beam up from an away mission then suddenly and without explaination finding youself just left there for years to fend for yourself. Then one day out of the blue you finaly get rescued...by Your self!! Now you find that some imposter, through some technobabble transporter malefunction, has assumed your life, took your name, made commander and stole your woman. On top of that he seems to belittle, talk down to and generlly hate your guts. Not only do you not even get an honorary promotion for "time served", but you have to fight tooth and nail just to get some of your possesions back; Which in the end winds up being an old beat up trumpet. That would be enough to make anyone quit Starfleet and turn to a life of crime in the Badlands.

Harry Kim going nowhere, but it's because the producers wanted to shove Wang out an airlock but he was named one of the biggest hotties in People Mag so they were stuck with him.

Mayweather's lack of career movement is puzzeling as he at least seemed competent.
