Who gets to live on the beach?

This is yet another....we don't have money in the future and we only do things to better ourselves.....thread

So in this utopia where the bar staff all love their jobs and the sewage workers wake up everyday with a smile on their face and a spring in their step, who gets to live by the beach?

Currently, the rich people with status get to enjoy this privilege but who gets to enjoy it in a society where privilege, wealth and class no longer exist?

We know status still exists (certainly in Starfleet) but if I'm working in a bar and don't get a nice house on the beach cos the admirals all have them, I'm gonna start a God damn revolution

And if anyone responds by saying, in the future, people will suddenly stop wanting to live by the beach, I'll scream

Okay, Barclay, presumably, and supposedly his Boston neighborhood wasn't utterly deserted (although I wouldn't blame them!). But it seems all inland cities have been evacuated, or global warming has brought the sea to them, and if that's not enough, they're going to raise Atlantis in the middle of the ocean...

As there are other living options on other planets, I would assume that living near Earth's polluted oceans is a much less attractive option. It's just not as fashionable as it once was to live in Malibu. Holodecks take care of those who want to walk on the beach now and again.

I can understand why people who want to live near the water can think it's a Utopian way of life, but until we lick corrosion, humidity, salt and weather-related issues, I will pass. I have lived very near beaches much of my life and know what it's really like. I'm just fine with visiting it once in awhile.

Living by the sea is just a way of highlighting the underlying issue. I can see where this is going so I'll simplify the point even further

Who gets to live in the big houses with big gardens and beautiful views

Everyone, right?

All houses are the same size with equal sized gardens and excellent views. Everybody has exactly the same house in the same area. But wait, I've decided to build a house by the sea that is way bigger than yours. It's massive and has a spectacular garden over looking the ocean. You're not bothered by this? (cos historically human beings don't really care when other people live in bigger houses and have better jobs, better lives. That stuff generally doesn't get under anyone's skin)

If there's no money in the future, people can build their house wherever they want.

Including the beach.

In that case, I wanna build my house where your house is because we can all do whatever we want and we can all live in a big house on the beach

I'd appreciate it if you could move out by Wednesday

In the future they'll have better money.

If you want to live by the beach, go looking for a beach house, but the ("non-existent") rich will have all the best locations.

Literally they will build it, because without money you can't get people to work for you.

I imagine that with space stations and other planets as an option, living by the beach on Earth doesn't have the same prestige as it used to.

Additionally, not everyone wants to live by a beach. Kirk's Nexus fantasy was the wilderness, away from his condo that had a great view of the bay.

Lastly, whatever Earth's economy looks like, it could be that beach houses aren't necessarily where they would be today. Mexico's government did the pretty shitty thing of letting gigantic hotel chains build on public beaches, and virtually next to each other, to the point that you'd have to trespass on private property in order to get to public property. If you're a country bumpkin who just wants to visit the beach, you'd essentially have to break the law.

If society is like Picard says, and they do not spend their lives in the quest for more things, than no one needs a large house. A large house is a status symbol, or a place to put ones stuff. Those that need large houses in the 24th century are those with large familes that require space for the children. Those type of homes are not near beaches.

As for the view...with 150 member worlds and thousands of colonies...the beach at sunset on Earth is pedestrian and quaint.

But it isn't a matter of prestige for all, some simply enjoy the view, while still havinf access to a nearby community.
