If race or gender isn't important, then why do some people keep pushing for a black or female doctor? It's not like they're pushing for one black or one female actor to take up the role, they're pushing for a black or female actor.
That's an agenda. I have no problem with a black female taking on the role, but I damned sure don't want that happening just because a bunch of vocal yahoos somehow think it's the right thing because it's somehow "progressive."
I wouldn't say it's specifically American. Violent black culture is a problem in my country too, and throughout Europe.
I have never seen any thing that would indicate to me that Idris Elba has any kind of violent disposition.
So the person who compares casting a white 20 something skinny Jewish actor with a high pitched voice as an iconic black leader with a baritone voice, whose color was essential to his identity, experience and endurance to casting a black actor as a fictional alien who changed his every cell every time he regenerates doesn't have a racist agenda. Course not. Silly politically correct me.
I can occasionally see hints of something fitting for the Doctor in Idris Elba's facial expressions, but AFAIK he's not a chameleon type actor so there's not going to be anything beyond that.
There is something very nice about his gentle eyes (?) or something. It would even be fun to see such a tough guy in the role if he consistently played it as gentle as possible, going completely against typecasting.
Not 100% sure about that though as he's usually just funny when he's aggressive...And then, in those rare moments when the Doctor needs to be furious, there's always that scary well to draw from.
