Two years ago this thread was made, at a time when Theresa May was expected to be knocked out of power imminently.

Now that a leadership election is actually in motion, I have revived the discussion. In retrospect I perhaps should have thought of this two weeks ago so that we could include the full original list. As it stands, the last parliamentary ballot has concluded, leaving Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson as the finalists who will go before the party's membership.

All I can say is that we will have a complete idiot.

I also thought this. As for the replacment my suggestion is the queen. Makes about as much sense as anything these days. Jason
 
A month later and Boris Johnson has been elected Leader of the Conservative & Unionist Party, with his appointment as Prime Minister scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
 
Okay, clueless American here. When the hell did Boris Johnson end up in Parliament?

Last night i'm checking my Twitter and I find a clip of Johnson making his intro speech in front of 10 Downing, and I was floored, because the last time I heard of him he was just the controversial mayor of London. I had no clue he was even an MP, much less elected a party leader, which shows how much i paid attention to him. How much have i missed?
 
He was an MP back in 2001 if I recall, then Mayor 2008-16, then back to MP in 2015. Foreign Secretary for a couple of years after that.
 
He was elected Member of Parliament for Uxbridge & South Ruislip on 7th May 2015. He did not seek re-election as Mayor of London, being replaced by Sadiq Khan on 9th May 2016.

During the 2016 referendum on European Union membership he became a prominent figure in the successful Leave campaign. On 13th July he was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs. He was re-elected to the House of Commons on 8th June 2017. He resigned from the government on 9th July 2018.

He stood in the Conservative Party's leadership election (7th June - 22nd July 2019), and won 66.4% of the members' votes. He was declared leader of the party on Tuesday, and yesterday he was appointed Prime Minister.
 
^thanks for the info! Over here, we don't get much detail on British politicians. However, a reporter on German radio compared him with Trump (to the advantage of the President). Is he really that far beyond.. err.. imagination?

He certainly likes to brag with what he (really?) believes (or wants his voters to believe) he can achieve. Unfortunately, things won't go as easy as he claims. Wjile in the EU, GB already had a lot of special rights. Keeping them all and sheding what few obligations there were would be utopical. You can't demand a divorce and keep your ex's complete fortune, house, car, and the dog, plus having him/her pay for the children.
