Whither Sam Kirk?

As I said, "Who the fuck is that kid and why is he there?"
Friend of Jimmys. What more do you really need?
A reason for being there.

His existence is random and not all explained or explored. Thus, he has no reason for being there. It's the first rule of storytelling.
Kid walking down the road as Jimmy drives by. No different than in any other movie where a car whizzzes by a stunned pedestrian. Did we need to know their relationships to the drivers too?

Does the protagonist yell said pedestrians' names and turn around to wave thus drawing attention to them?

In some cases, maybe. Does it really matter? Besides, it establishes that Kirk does have friends/a friend, and thus may not be a loner.

Also, the reaction helps underline how surprising it is for young Kirk to be there, doing that.

They might. Or they could smile and wave. Johnny's age indicates he might be a friend of Jimmy's. Jimmy's use of the name confirms it. So he's a kid shocked to see his pal racing down the street in an antique car. All the info you need is in the scene.

I didn't catch that in the deleted stuff - I'll have to watch again. That make sense - "Sam" was probably his middle name, called that to ease confusion with the old man. And J.T. definetly yells "Hey GEORGIE" when he passes him on the road - I've watched the DVD about 8 times, at full volume.

It was dubbed to say Johnny. Even the deleted scene with "Johnny" says Johnny on it.

I either need my hearing checked, or I have a unique DVD, but i listened to it again last night 5 times, and I hear "Georgie" when he yells.

I'm pretty sure that kid is George Samuel Kirk Jr, James Kirk's brother. I'll have to check out that scene tonight, and hear if Jim calls out Johnny! or Georgie!

I recently re-watched the scene, this time with the DVD subtitles, and I can confirm that young Jimmy does indeed yell "Johnny."

Jim does indeed say "Johnny." I just ignore that because it just made the whole bit more complicated than the filmmakers probably thought it would. Non-fans would have just said "Okay, he has a friend named Georgie/Sammy," instead of "Okay, he has a friend name Johnny," while fans would have said "Cool! That was Sam!" instead of "Who the **** is Johnny?"

Was it ever established whos vette that was young Kirk stole and sadly drove off a cliff?

Going by just the theatrical release of the film, I thought it was meant to be the stepfather's. But it appears that in an earlier conception of the scene - in which the stepfather was "Uncle Frank" - it was meant to have originally been George's.

I thought it was the stepfather's.
In the movie, Stepdad says over the phone that it's his, so that's the official version.

In the original script and in a scene which was filmed but omitted from the finished movie, Sam (George Jr.) tells Young Jim Kirk that it had been their father's car and that the reason Jim was washing the car was because Uncle Frank (replaced in the movie by Stepdad) was about to sell it. (The Kirk/Corvette joyride was to have followed this scene.)

The dialogue during James Kirk's birth and Pike's discussion with Kirk at the Iowa bar makes it seem like George and Winona Kirk only had one child. So I don't expect that we will see George Samuel Kirk in the new continuity.

The dialog doesn't have anything to say either way about George Kirk Jr.

A filmed scene, which was deleted, shows the intent to have Kirk's older brother in the movie.

Pacing/editing led to the exclusion, nothing else.

I have to go back and watch, but where in the actual movie does it say the voice on the Nokia is UNCLE FRANK? or anyone for that matter. He just says he wants the car back in the same condition, that his (Jim's) mother is offworld. And for that matter, would UNCLE FRANK be his mother's brother, father's brother, mother's "boyfriend"? Which is it?

This is my thought as well. It is one of the director's decisions where I disagree. It would have been a nod to the fans to call him Georgie or Sam, although the background scene would have been better. It was dropped so that James Tiberius Kirk would come onscreen with a bang.

My preference would have been to open with the scene we got and interject the other scene as a flashback, between Uncle Frank on the phone and the cop pulling up to him. The action would remain intact with the needed background information supplied, as well. Without the background, Jimmy's motivation for stealing the car is missing.

If they ever bring in an adult Sam in a future movie, they can reuse the cut footage (replacing the Uncle Frank actor with Greg Grunberg as stepdad?), and add the line, "And he keeps calling me Johnny! What's up with that?" :)

Well the stepdad is obviously an asshole, judging from the sound of his voice, so I assume that Jimmy stole the car and intentionally wrecked it to get back at the guy.

^I believe that it is highly unlikely that any future Abramsverse film will mention George Samuel Kirk Jr. Pike doesn't mention Sam in the Iowa bar scene. Probably won't hear about Spock's half-brother Sybok either.
