Judging from the trailers, Olympus Has Fallen seems a lot better than White House Down.
But both remind me how sad these times are where we don't have good action heroes anymore. A film like this would have been awesome in the 80s and early 90s.
Try 1997, when it was called...
As for
OHF and
WHD, I haven't seen either, but if I had the choice, I'd go with
WHD for several reasons:
- Gerald Butler,
boooo. Not only has he (reportedly) lazed through a number of terrible and societally odious romcoms, he's yet
another furriner in a role that clearly calls for either a native son, or at the
very least someone who can pull of an accent as flawless as, say, Hugh Laurie's. Which the But cannot.
- I like Eckhart plenty, but President Foxx sounds more fun.
-
WHD features numerous short cutaways to
The Young Turks contributor and former
At the Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, which is pretty darn cool.
-
WHD scores a 52 on Metacritic, whereas
OHF - whose earlier release
should have enjoyed a relative bump due to comparative freshness - only got a 41.
Conclusion: although
OHF does get some points for being an R, WHD seems to have more going for it, including the critical consensus that it's the more fun flick.
