Which Star Trek movie had the best music?

Voted for TMP
Jerry Goldsmith's masterful score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture musically blends Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's romantic visions of 23rd Century life with the eerie mysteries of unknown space, earning an Oscar nomination in 1979 for "Best Original Score."(and scould have won)
While the film's Star trek The Motion Picture merits have been hotly contested since its 1979 release, two elements have always received unanimous approval. First, it undeniably launched the current wave of the Star Trek franchise, which has resulted in nine(ten in 2008) more feature films. Contray to many TWOK did not save franchise because Star trek The Motion Picture was a big hit at the box office.Second Jerry Goldsmith masterpice scores for the film.

This slipcased new edition resequences Goldsmith's music and supplements it with 25 minutes of previously unreleased typically masterful cues. Hmm i wonder when TMP got Oscar nomination were these supplements scores included in 1979 release? if not perhaps outcome would then have been different. I an thinking buying slipcased new edition soon.

I love the tracks of 1-8.
I have TMP and FC in my car CD changer right now. TWOK is great. I really like TSFS and the jauntiness of TVH. TFF is in my bedroom CD player right now. TUC definitely describes the mood of the film and GEN has an eerieness about it...

I love Horner's TWOK score, and Eidelman's TUC score is very good and quite different from the other ones.

But the king of them all is Goldsmith's TMP. It plays on its own almost like a symphony, and it evokes the film perfectly.

Definitely The Motion Picture - very thematic! I'm not a big fan of The Voyage Home music a little too chimey and happy!
Actually I really like it - it is full of joy, as is Trek.
While The Motion Picture certainly has the best music -- really, has it ever not won one of these surveys in a landslide? -- I agree that The Voyage Home music is marvellously joyous, particularly in its opening and closing themes, and a ready way to cure a lousy day. The only thing it's missing is Donald O'Connor dancing to it.

My personal favorite is the main title from First Contact. Absolutely stirring. However, except for TUC, each film had great music. Even TUC had one or two good themes.

TMP. Not sinply the main theme, but in particular the overture, which sounds BIG. I hope the new movie can get that kind of scoring.

TVH sounded like Xmas music to me, too, and also evocative of the Bakshi LOTR, btw.

TMP is still the greatest film score I've ever heard, Trek or otherwise. That "blaster beam" is one of the wickedest, craziest instruments I've ever heard. When I first heard it as a little kid, it actually scared the shit out of me.

However, I think the main theme sounded best in TFF with all the extra swirling strings in it.

True... And can anybody else see, as they're listening to the music, Kirk yelling at that taxi driver?

I'd have to say TMP, though TWOK and TSFS (Sorta by default being an extension of TWOK music) are very close. It's almost like a benevolent co-rulership for my personal title of Best Trek Score. TMP just has final say. ;)

When I first heard it I thought it sounded like a Christmas carol.

I just hope when STXI comes out they'll keep the original theme song (maybe go a little easier on the bongos, though).

I remember thinking the EXACT same thing, the first time I heard the opening in the theatre. I think I even leaned over to my brother and whispered so. The big colorful nebula formation during the credits didn't help that sensation either. I got the soundtrack LP for Christmas that year, and to this day that movie is my "Christmas Trek."

I voted for TFF. I know that movie gets a bum rap (I happen to really like it) but the score is fantastic. Get the soundtrack and you may be surprised at what you're missing.

It is probably heresy, but I gotta side with David Gerrold and say that the vger-oriented music in the latter part of TMP really works against the movie, making it seem kinda grind-like (or more grind-like.) The stuff is beautiful and fascinating to listen to, but doesn't work for the moviegoing experience IMO. Having said that, I also find the Enterprise-Earth stuff to be among the best music Goldsmith ever did (and that is saying alot, since I think he is the composer of the century.)

so I vote for TFF. Except for some minor RAMBO stuff and an unfortunate comedy cue, it is pretty damned great.

^ My opinion is the diametrically opposite of that. Aside from the dreadfully dull "cloud" music, the V'ger music is the only thing that makes the score interesting. Whereas I don't see the point of the "Enterprise" theme at all. I wonder what Goldsmith had in mind for the Enterprise boarding sequence before Wise overrode his judgement. There's just a hint of it on the TMP DVD.

Whoever thought Motion Picture has anything good is out of their mind...

It had decent music, despite it was a prelude for music for ST:NG...

Wrath of Khan or The Undiscovered Country was better...

They both had a rising point at the end, like in undiscovered coutnry that was perfectly setup for the next scene when the moon blew up. Then the movie started.

I do give Motion Picture alot of credit, where it is due. It is not a bad film, a little hard to follow, there should be alot more scenes from the novel added that would help tell the story. Not too bad despite it was written and based on the Roddenberry Novel.

I think there were alot of scenes they probably cut that could have better explained v'ger, why kirk came back to HQ so quick and more about him as an admiral and Vice Adm Chana' (who died in the transporter accident with Commander Sonak). She is the one who briefed him by hologram communications at Gilbitar Comm Station. She is the reason why Kirk faced down the Star Fleet Commander, Nogura, and got the Enterprise back... :) He did not want or like being a Desk Jockey...
