I chose Lower Decks for me, but I think I may be more interested in watching the kiddie one with my kiddie.

Did any Trek show prior to this one draw in younger viewers BY using young characters as the principal characters?

If not, then there's no reason to cater with pacifiers to children as such. And catering to them risks adults not watching, and Trek has typically been an adult but kid-friendly show (but without the need to lower itself to their level the way Barney, Teletubbies, or Doctor Who had done. Which isn't a fair comparison, Barney and Teletubbies were never meant for adults - parents would be in other rooms as they're not going to sit through such repetitive horror that would make Freddie and Jason squeal in angst...)

Maybe not, but when is the last time Star Trek tried to appeal to kids? Modern day kids shows use kid protagonists (Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Teen Titans, TMNT, Avatar, most of the recent Spider-Man shows, X-Men Evolution, Avatar, Gravity Falls, Star vs. Evil, etc) to appeal to kids, why would Nickelodeon not follow that trend with this show?

And Nickelodeon does not care if adults watch their shows or not, they are not the target audience, the only adult opinion they care about is concerned parents who may prevent their kids from watching a show if they think its inappropriate, otherwise, the kid demographic is the only one they care about. That being said, I still think the first Avatar cartoon is a great work of fiction, despite being aimed at kids (is far better than live action Air Bender movie), I think you could have something that works for kids and still gets the ethos of Star Trek right, we shouldn't try to ''gatekeep'' this show that could make Star Trek more appealing to kids (assuming Nickelodeon does it not screw it over like it has with other animated shows). Something can be for kids and not be garbage.

I think this show is a good idea overall and could be surprisingly good (at least it would not be trying to be adult all the time like the first seasons of Discovery, I like Discovery, but man they tried too hard with that in the first season.

Wesley.

And to a lesser extent, Jake and Nog.

To an even lesser extent, Naomi Wildman.

Seven Of Nine.

Galoob Toys in 1987, later Playmates.
Those weren’t really meant for grown ups you know...
Micro Machines were a fifty fifty shot, and innerspace stuff was about 75-25

I would also draw attention to the TMP figures, and the Mego stuff.

I think both shows will be aimed at kids, just Lower Decks will most likely be teenagers or pre-teens and up. The other will most likely be for grade school kids.

Jason

In an interview I heard with one of the Lower Decks writers, he made it clear that it was definitely an adult show, "not for the kids."

Some may think me immature, but I actually like some cartoons that are aimed at kids. I think since the 90s, there have several animated series aimed at children that were good shows in general: Batman TAS, X-Men TAS, Steven Universe, Avatar, Star Wars Clone Wars, Gargoyles, etc. I think in the right hands, this show could appeal to kids and still be an entertaining piece of Star Trek that fans of all ages could enjoy.

Green Lantern: TAS is just an amazing sci fi show in general. It is definitely not a kids show.

What does Rick and Morty have to do with animated Star Trek? What is TNG S8? What does anything I just read at the beginning of this thread mean? Heh.

For all you Survivor fans out there, David Wright (Millennials vs. Gen X, Edge of Extinction) is a writer for Lower Decks, as well as Cochran (South Pacific, Caramoan).

Easily the Nick show. Assuming it tries to aim for the same tone shows like Star Wars Rebels, Clone Wars, and even Resistance aims for then I think it should be good. A kids show that actually respects it's audience (doesn't talk down to kids) and realizes that adults will be watching either with their kids or by themselves. Not cater to adults but just knows they'll be there. Those shows are very different from the mindless crazy and dumb that is frantic just to keep a young child's attention.

Lower Decks is a show I'm looking forward to but I think I have an good idea of how that might be handled. Thing is I don't see it potentially spawning toys or drawing in kids (maybe newer viewers hopefully) which I think is ultimately more important for the franchise, for CBS with it's new offerings as older fans die off and are replaced. They will also be good as a counter to the racist, sexist, and toxic faction out there where CBS can continue to ignore them and focus on those not like that and are younger. Anything that pushes those people out quicker the better.
