Which show could benefit from a time jump?

the Simpsons. Jump it ahead to the point where the entire cast is dead and cancel it already.

But its an enjoyable show. American TV is far too competitive, here in the UK we have several shows, one of which -
Eastenders, has ran non stop 3 nights a week for 30 years. Obviously there are only 2 original cast members remaining today, but the show has stayed true throughout and it will probably run another 30 years and possibly beyond!

"Cable TV" ruins TV, everything is short term and subject to cancellation, even if the ratings are still pulling in 4 or 5 million viewers. I guess thats not a large enough number for a country populated by nearly 300 million people but its still a fair share of the viewing market.

The Simpsons is a rare show that has lasted a very long time. I see no need to end it, even if the material isn't considered "as good" as it might have been a few years back. Its still an important part of American culture and its one of those things thats been a successful import worldwide.

No, network television ruins television. Cable channels produce some of the best shows in the country, especially premium cable channels. The networks are run by largely vapid, quick-to-cancel, money-grubbing asshats. They have no interest in creating good, high-quality shows. They only care about shows that bring in large numbers of viewers for as long as possible, as cheaply as possible. Doesn't matter if it only lasts one season or twenty. Hence the rampant and disgusting amount of "reality" shows out there.

Actually, I take it back. It's the audiences of network television that ruin television.

Sorry, I should have rephrased it better. I'm from the UK and not exactly informed with the correct USA lingo in reference to your tv organisations. What I meant by "Cable TV" was actually "Network TV".

Asides from that, I agree that audiences are the problem for crap tv. We live in a period where "reality" based tv and light entertainment shows dominate the tv networks. Shows like 24, Prison Break, etc have no chance of beating out shows like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars in ratings. But I think we are moving away from this cultural leanings as CBS ditched CSI (a very popular drama that these days is severly lacking in substance) and gave its timeslot to a new Pilot show called "Person of Interest" which has apparently recieved the highest test ratings in 15 years. I guess more and more people are seeking substance that they aren't getting from the reality shows.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that point. I find the current episodes unwatchable. I also think that, as the ratio of good seasons to bad shrinks a little more each year, it stops being a good show and becomes an overall mediocre to poor show.

This is a sad truth. Roughly seasons 3-7 were among the most perfect run of any television show, then they had to pile on over a decade of embarrassment and torture.

And I hate the idea of "time jumps". They should call them shark jumps.

I think it would be awesome if Glee time-jumped to a period where it didn't exist anymore.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - By its very nature it doesn't really benefit from a time jump. A prequel, maybe...Cragen's old days with Max Greevey when they were partners? But that's mostly a mothership prequel, not SVU. (Same goes for CI, when Danny Ross partnered with Zach Nichols.)

How I Met Your Mother, you know, just far enough that the show actually tells us how he met the mother.

The Walking Dead, but that will probably happen anyway to account for the children in the cast growing.
