Which science most benefits humanity?

john titor

Captain
My list

0. Math, if you count it as a blind science
1. Physics
2. Computer Science
3. Chemistry
4. Biology

N/A

Social sciences

Physics/math are the ulimate sciences, biology, chemistry and comp science all derive from these two disciplines. In addition physics and math are manly disciplines.

All of the above. No science can or should function in isolation. All knowledge is interconnected, and a healthy dialogue among different scientific disciplines is important to all of them. And you can never predict in advance what discipline or mix of disciplines might prove vital to solving the urgent problems of the day.

And "manly disciplines?" What millennium are you stuck in?

Of course it's impossible to compare the "worth" of various disciplines, but I think anyone would agree that geology is a very important science. All of that oil and mineral deposits found by geologists have certainly been useful in constructing our society.

Scientific method itself.

Besides, it obsoletes monasteries, reveals Oil, and leads to communism (via liberalism), physics (with astronomy) and biology (via chemistry). :bolian:

I would say that Chemistry has improved the standard of living morethan any of the others.

ah excellent, in a way this is the most manly component of science, if one were to find the core of the manly sciences, physics, engineering and the like it would be the scientific method.

You use this word again, "manly" - are you referring to Manly, New South Wales? ;)

But seriously, if it wasn't for the principles of the scientific method, we wouldn't get anywhere, really.

No as Manly is a noun and a place name and as such begins with a capital letter.

I agree with Christopher. And I'd also throw in that we need philosophy just as much, in order to ask the meta questions about what science is and why we do it, and the humanities in order to explore the fascinating, rich and varied contexts of the people doing the asking.

The entire C.P. Snow 'two cultures' position is detrimental, and counterproductive in a world where new discoveries and ideas are generated by people sharing and interacting with different fields.

But then, I just have one of those silly lady brains, which are only good for writing novels, admiring kittens, and discovering ways to isolate radium, so what would I know?

  Awesome. But perhaps the most importat science of all is the one best delivered by Nimoy: "You have discovered Animal Husbandry."

The funniest science of all is the science of satellites: "Beep.... Beep.... Beep.... Beep...." :guffaw:

Is it a quote from Civilization games? I had it in Italian, didn't know it was Nimoy doing the voice-over in the English version!

Specifically, Civ 4. :D (However, the new techs from Beyond The Sword are voiced by Sid Meier himself.)

Not on the OP's original list, but my estrogen idled mind votes for medical science.

As I understand it, astrology and alchemy got the whole thing started, so, historically, I think you'd have to say those have been to two most important branches of scientific study.

According to red mage you can do anything with animal husbandry...

Red Mage: There is no problem that cannot be overcome by an imaginative and vigorous use of the animal husbandry skill.
