Was never able to find a stand-alone version of that photo, but I did find another use of it, on the cover of the
New Zealand Listener magazine. It's cropped differently than on the Gold Key comic, so you see more at the right of the image, but lose some at the bottom.
These ones aren't quite the same shot, but they would appear to be from the same shoot, as they use the same props.
This one is the most similar:
Then there's this:
The next image has Nimoy standing with what appears to be the background equipment from the images above. These images show that photo, cropped slightly differently in each case, on the cover of New Zealand TV Weekly and Brisbane TV Week:
That uniform looks quite thick there….
As
@hbquikcomjamesl alluded to, I believe these are all from publicity photos taken after "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was filmed, but before TOS itself came out. The version of uniform Nimoy wears in these publicity images was never actually used in any episode.
They certainly got their money's worth out of the pre-series publicity images, though. In addition to
Spock Must Die, images from that era were used on a few different Gold Key comics, a number of (mostly Entertainment / TV) magazine covers (both vintage and modern), and even the cover of a music album Nimoy released!
I imagine most of you have seen it, but if not, here's the "flashlight picture" that
@hbquikcomjamesl
referred to:
