Which one do you prefer Picard S3 or The Genesis Trilogy + VI?

Yeah, he wanted Spocks death to be final and absolute. Mind you..Nimoy wanted Spock to die also as a story point, yet the "rebirth" aspect appealed to him, likely on his own philosophical and religious levels.
It's interesting to read Nimoy's thoughts on the subject, and the philosophical struggle he had. Also, it put him in a bit of conflict between himself and the studio, since the took the book "I Am Not Spock" as a sign of his dissatisfaction with the role, and not wanting to go forward. Which, wasn't really the case but Nimoy certainly had his own points of view on it. His request to come back as director was considered a sign of more bridge building than anything else.

I personally believes the Genesis trilogy + TUC carried more stakes and weight than PIC:S3. I like the arcs for Kirk and Spock, losing a son, blowing up the Enterprise. These were things they tried in Generations (okay, brother and niece died off screen) and they fell flat, because of been there done that. They deliberately avoided a lot of the cues from the TOS movies in PIC:S3. I really like how PIC:S3 organically brought back the TNG crew one by one and the E-D (aka The ship that outdoes the Defiant as Millennium Falcon!). Overall, very good, worthy effort on PIC:S3, but I will take the Genesis Trilogy + TUC any day as well.

TWOK-thru-TUC did far more universe-building and less direct plot cribbing from its past legacy. Which is impressive since TWOK is an indirect rehash of Moby Dick and a couple other books one can find in Khan's bookshelf, with original bits added. But then, "The Brain of Morbius" of Doctor Who fame was cribbing "Frankenstein" but coming up with something that feels truly and surprisingly original. Sometimes inspiration is inevitable, I'd maintain the end goal feels like it should be to make the end result feel original and not just having the audience point at the screen and go "I remember the last time they did that!" That's also why I also love Firefly despite its roots, and ditto for Blake's 7 despite its roots... but I digress.

TUC also has a stronger story to TLG, which isn't to say it doesn't have plot holes or conveniences either. Ditto for both story arcs as wholes (esp. TVM and TFF.)

TUC and S3 both use characters as comedy fodder. Uhura the linguistics expert/comm officer can't handle a book, and Worf is now Ambassador of the Klingons now Spiritual Sibling of Bortus of Moclas with the threesome, nap time, and other out-of-nowhere jokes. Humor is subjective, but I've generally not been keen whenever the cast is reduced to direct comedy fodder in a script.

Did we need the Borg as the big-big bad, again? Arguably. Could they have been concluded again more effectively? Yeah, but there's enough dialogue that suits the mood (save for Worf).

If anything, S3 feels more rushed after a spectacular build-up. TWOK-TUC, save for TFF, feels like a slow build-up with a finale that's suitably big but not feeling rushed.

^^this :luvlove:

GEN onward often tried to redo the stunts of the 80s movies, while forgetting some narrative and character depth, which S3 was working hard at rebuilding (and doing a pretty snazzy job in doing so.) The 90s films feel far more like best-of rehashes and cast reunion parties. NEM, for all its faults, is also trying to grow things out - but shoved too much into the plot to believe. The result was a mess, though S3 does deftly use some of what the 90s movies introduced - so kudos there. S3 also pulled some new tricks that simply wowed and added dramatic weight, which the 90s movies almost never pulled off.

Bonus points to S3 as well, given how they made the rebuild of the "D" believable, and I can buy into the finale having it being more maneuverable than ever before (Geordi doing more upgrades as usual, another character trait.) Plus, it's nice to see Crusher get to do something big.

He was upset about changes made to the end of TWOK without his agreement and refused to return. My guess is the implied possibility of Spocks ressurection pissed in his cheerios and he decided to take his ball and go home.

Its funny because the Genesis trilogy is the only reason he was asked back to do TUC.
They added the tube ending, which I think Meyer did not want.
Ah okay, thanks!

TUC's finale didn't really feel spectacular, but more momentus
Yeah, those final graceful moments is what puts it ever so slightly ahead of TWOK for me. I always tear up at everyone's realization that this is the end + Kirk's final monologue and the signatures on screen is just 20/10 no notes perfection.

In the TOS Movies, it doesn't take long to learn the villains' motivations. Here, it takes episodes and episodes and episodes

That's one of the aspects of Mystery Box writing that I hate the most. They don't just hide basic plot information, they hide character motivation and any information that would help the audience to understand what the hell is going on. Season 1 was absolutely terrible about this too, with basic questions like "why did the Romulans infiltrate Starfleet" and "why did Jurati kill Maddox" left hanging for weeks.

The TOS movies are also at most 2 hours long.

you gotta get to business.

Picard season 3 was five times that long

But we didn’t know Vgers true identify and motives until the last 10 minutes of TMP

And sometimes crucial info isn't even in the box at all.

Can't I just say I like 'em both?!
