Which of the ten commandments do you follow/have you broken?

Right, disclaimer:

- The numbers are purely for reference. I haven't ranked them in anyway.
- The ten listed below seem to be the "ten". I know there are MANY variations of them, sometimes more than ten. These are the ones I'm sticking with.
- Lets keep this civilised. Please no religious bashing. Mods can close this or move to TNZ (or whatever it's called these days) if it gets out of hand.

01 - "I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me."

02 - "Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."

03 - "Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."

04 - "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"

05 - "Honor your father and your mother"

06 - "Do not murder"

07 - "Do not commit adultery."

08 - "Do not steal."

09 - "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"

10 - "Do not covet your neighbor's wife"
01 - I'm an Athiest, so this one doesn't apply to me. Though TECHNICALLY I have no other God so I am following this one. :)

02 - See above.

03 - I fail this one.

04 - I try every week, though not in a religious sense. More of a 'try to do bugger all' sense.

05 - Yep, I do.

06 - Only annoying insects.

07 - I strongly follow this one.

08 - Meh. I sadly fail at this, though I try to keep my conscience clean... still a fail though...

09 - I'm guessing this one means "don't lie"? I try not to.

10 - Again, I follow this one. My neighbour's wife is pretty hot though...

I probably fail on #1 and #2, being an atheist who thinks any idea of an afterlife is bullshit;
I definitely fail #3 and #4 regularly
and sometimes #5 although I usually try not to;
I haven't killed anyone and I'm militantly pacifist so I think pass #6 with flying colours;
never have been married and never even cheated on any of my girlfriends, so no problem with #7;
#8 - oh well, I watch lots of American tv by illegally downloading it, and sometimes movies as well, some people would call that "stealing". I don't think I've stolen any physical objects since I was a kid though
#9: hm, I think I'm mostly ok on that
#10 that would be a fail. ;)

01 - Agnostic. So I'm thinking it doesn't really apply to me.

02 - Same answer.

03 - Yeah... While I may not believe in God, I have combined his name with a few curses in my day.

04 - Again, not religious, so it doesn't really apply. I do whatever I want on Sunday.

05 - I try to. I may not always get along with them, but I love and respect them, and I'm sure they know that.

06 - :shifty: I'm afraid that's classified. *

07 - Never had a serious relationship, so I've never been "adulterous", nor have I ever been "the other man"... as far as I know.

08 - No, I can't say I've ever stolen anything.

09 - Of course I've told a few lies in my life, but none that ever got anyone into some serious trouble.

10 - Eh, I don't know my neighbours that well. In the broader sense I'm sure it's referring to, though, I've coveted many people's wives, and I intend to go on doing so for a long time. :D

* ;)

1. I'm not sure if i do believe in God. I'm leaning towards no.

2. Does that mean stars? Kinda vague. ;)

3. Goddammit. Oh, there i go. ;)

4. The Sabbath is for football.

5. I do this one yeah.

6. I have an aversion to violence so i doubt this will happen.

7. I haven't done it and i'm not the kind of person that would cheat and what have you.

8. Oh i've done that lots of time.

9. I don't even know what that means.

10. No hot neighbors around me. :(

01 - "I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me."

I'm not Jewish so does that really apply?

02 - "Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."

Doesn't like astronomers or the Hubble telescope apparently.

03 - "Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."

I always mean it when I swear although I don't think Christ actually rode a bicycle and his middle name didn't begin with "H".

04 - "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"

No doing the weekly shop, right? Sorry, broken that.

05 - "Honor your father and your mother"

Even if they're morons?

06 - "Do not murder"

Ok, I like that one.

07 - "Do not commit adultery."

Ok, saves getting beaten up by the husband.

08 - "Do not steal."

.. and yes, that does include downloading.

09 - "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"

Ok, I like that one as well.

10 - "Do not covet your neighbor's wife"

What happened to the one about coveting your neighbour's ass? That was always good for a laugh at school.

1. Well being an atheist I am technically not putting any other Gods before that one so yeah I am following it.

2. I've probably finger-painted a drawing or two with the sun in it when I was a tot.

3. God damn that's a commandment! Jesus H. Christ what will they think of next?

4. Nope, not particularly holy on any day.

5. Not really sure what this one means. There's lots of ways you can honor or dis-honor.

6. Not yet.

7. Not married, but haven't cheated on my girlfriend. Yet.

8. Yeah probably in the small ways that everybody does.

9. Lied about myself a lot, but never really about others.

10. As George Carlin said, "Covet. Heavy on the covet."

01 - Not religious. Don't believe in an invisible man in the sky that will send me to a place where I will be burned and tortured for eternity if I don't do as he says, yet is supposed to love me and be forgiving. [cough]bullshit[cough] Excuse me, something was caught in my throat there.

02 - Fail. I have worked on theories of alternate realities, tangent time lines, 26 dimensions in each, and what you find after your reality has reached it's infinity and what is beyond even that. A "god" that rules a single reality seems quite small after that.

03 - Jesus Christ! Lord do I ever fail the fuck out of this one too.

04 - Not religious. Not applicable. But if I was, I'd fail this too.

05 - Half fail. I succeed in regards to my mother. But in regards to my physically and mentally abusive father who stole the inheritance left to me and my sister by our grandmother and then deserted us when I was 11? Fuck him. If the bastard wasn't dead now, I'd be tempted to kill him should we ever cross paths.

06 - I plead the fifth.

07 - Hey! I finally got one! At least, I am reasonably certain I have.

08 - I failed this back when I was a kid. I have learned from that mistake and the error of my ways since, however.

09 - Fail. I do remember starting some rumors about the security guy at my old high school when I went there many years ago. But it was more of an experiment to see how stupid my fellow classmates were in if they believed it or not.

10 - Fail. Still have a torch for an old girlfriend. Learned some months ago that she got married and had a daughter in the years since I have seen her. I won't act on it, and she doesn't even know I know. I want her happy so I will leave her alone. But still...

Wow. It's a good thing I am not Christian or religious. I'd really be fucked, wouldn't I? But, I really am a nice guy. And a more loyal and trusted friend you'd never find. Really! No, really! ;)

01 - Inapplicable. I don't believe in the Supernatural.

02 - I don't recall drawing anything related to Christian mythology, but I may have, and I may in the future.

03 - Possibly, but religious expressions don't roll trippingly off my tongue.

04 - Inapplicable.

05 - I honor people who deserve it; that only applies to half of my Parents.

06 - I would be unlikely to kill anyone, except in defense.

07 - I never break promises.

08 - I never steal.

09 - I never lie.

10 - Nothing wrong with coveting something unobtainable.

01 - "I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me."

Oh yeah, I've broken this one.

02 - "Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."

This one, too.

03 - "Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."

Every goddamn day.

04 - "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"

I don't go to church.
For me, keeping the Sabbath day holy means eating nachos while watching Star Trek.

05 - "Honor your father and your mother"

This I follow most thoroughly.

06 - "Do not murder"

I have never broken this one.

07 - "Do not commit adultery."

I have never broken this one, either.

08 - "Do not steal."

This... is a tough one. I might as well say that I've broken it. I used to download a few songs years ago, I don't do it anymore, but I did do it a few times before the guilt got the best of me.

09 - "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"

This I have never broken.

10 - "Do not covet your neighbor's wife"

All the fucking time.

1. Not even sure I believe in any God.
2. Does drawing numerous images of starships count?
3. I've never lied after swearing on the bible. But, yes, I have used the Lord's name when cursing.
4. Blame my employer for making me bust this one.
5. Got this one covered.
6. Got this one covered if one is referring to people and higher animals. Annoying insects are fair game, though.
7. I've never been married, and unless thinking counts then I've never been with someone else's wife either.
8. In small ways I'm busted on this one.
9. I cannot recall ever lying to cover my own ass and get someone else in trouble. I have lied, though, usually to get out of something unpleasant. So technically I'm busted on this.
10. Although I've never acted on the thought I am busted on this because I have pined for someone unavailable.

I've probably failed more laws of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, but here's on the 10 Commandments (this will be long because I've given it lots of thought):

01 - "I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me."

No problem there.

02 - "Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."

Otherwise, no engraven images (the other way this is phrased). Obviously, the way this is translated and interpreted makes a big difference. I don't worship images, but I've possessed images of Jesus in the past (I own a nativity set, for example). I think I go with the Catholic interpretation that if it's for education or representation, but not adulation or worship it's OK (although I think I have a Crucifix, which is pushing it).

03 - "Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."

This one I've thought the most about. If it means you can't say "God damn it", I would fail miserably. I don't particularly buy this because it would also imply saying "God bless you" when someone sneezes if you aren't actively wishing God to bless them would also break this command. In ancient times, swearing by a god had a lot more significance because people would swear to treaties and contracts by a god. In that context, I haven't broken this. If I make a promise to someone invoking the name of God, I mean it. The third interpretation is along the lines of don't attribute things to God by saying "God commands this" if He doesn't. I don't do that either. So I'll give myself a pass here.

04 - "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"

Sometimes succeed, sometimes fail. Keep in mind that this commandment has more because of the reasons used. In ancient times, it came with a requirement of no work on Sundays (enforced very seriously with all possible definitions of work). If I factored that in, I'd always fail. I rarely go to church, so in that regard I'd fail. In just thinking about Sundays (or Saturdays) and their significance, I'd probably fail at that too.

05 - "Honor your father and your mother"

OK for the most part. As long as the commandment doesn't call for absolute obedience, I can show them respect and honor.

06 - "Do not murder"

Good on this one

07 - "Do not commit adultery."

Good on this one

08 - "Do not steal."

Almost good on this one, but I've stolen once or twice in my life (often with a very questionable rationale of borrowing). Nothing serious, though.

09 - "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"

I'm good on this one. I don't interpret this to mean "don't lie", but that it has to be about an accusation.

10 - "Do not covet your neighbor's wife"

I'm assuming neighbor is more metaphorical (meaning anyone's wife). Still, I can't think of anyone who's married where my thought is "I wish they weren't married so I could have sex with them." I've acknowledged a woman is attractive who is married, but that's about it. In this one, assuming it isn't the most stringent standard possible for coveting, I'm pretty good. I think there were some other coveting things originally listed that I might get in trouble for, though.

Not really relevant to anything, but I've done the following out of the ten commandments:

I have had other gods before God, I have used various things as idols, I have taken the Lord's name in vain, I have forgotten the Sabbath day, I have not honored my parents, I have murdered, I have committed adultery, I have stolen, I have lied about others, I have coveted my neighbors wife and others things that are my neighbor's.

So yeah, all of 'em.

I'll have fun with this. :)

01 - "I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me."
Atheist here. So I guess I fail this big time.
Conclusion: FAIL.

02 - "Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."

 Being an astrophysicist, I have to make pictures of the heavens above daily. Sorry God, it's just business.
Conclusion: FAIL

03 - "Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..."
I'm not big on swearing because I know it annoys some people, and I like being polite. But I've done it sometimes.
Conclusion: FAIL

04 - "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"
No way. I often work on the weekend. As for keeping it holy, being an atheist is kind of a problem for that.
Conclusion: FAIL

05 - "Honor your father and your mother"
I love them. About honoring them... well, not always.
Conclusion: FAIL

06 - "Do not murder"
I never killed anyone, so I guess I pass this one.
Conclusion: WIN

07 - "Do not commit adultery."
Never cheated on my significant other. Good boy, that's me.
Conclusion: WIN

08 - "Do not steal."
I use job stuff (pc, xerox, etc) to do personal thing, I suppose it counts like stealing. Plus, some books I borrowed and never returned (I will, honestly!)
Conclusion: FAIL

09 - "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"
Difficult to say, but I've been prone to gossiping, I guess it counts like lying about people (can't be all true).
Conclusion: FAIL

10 - "Do not covet your neighbor's wife"
Ok, any man that says he doesn't do this is lying.
Conclusion: FAIL

Lucifer, I'm coming! ;)

Just to be the anal little person I am, the tenth commandment is about not coveting anything that belongs to your neighbor. Not just his wife. It drives me nuts when people leave out the rest of the commandment.
